A vampire soldier weary of life...

Centuries ago, Sebastian Wroth was turned into a vampire—a nightmare in his mind—against his will. Burdened with hatred and alone for ages, he sees little reason to live. Until an exquisite, fey creature comes to kill him, inadvertently saving him instead.

A valkyrie assassin dispatched to destroy him...

When Kaderin the Cold Hearted lost her two beloved sisters to a vampire attack long ago, a benevolent force deadened her sorrow—accidentally extinguishing all of her emotions. Yet whenever she encounters Sebastian, her feelings—particularly lust—emerge multiplied. For the first time, she's unable to complete a kill.

Competitors in a legendary hunt...

The prize of the month-long contest is powerful enough to change history, and Kaderin will do anything to win it for her sisters. Wanting only to win her, forever, Sebastian competes as well, taking every opportunity—as they travel to ancient tombs and through catacombs, seeking relics around the world—to use her new feelings to seduce her. But when forced to choose between the vampire she's falling for and reuniting her family, how can Kaderin live without either?

I want to be a Valkyie! This was my favorite in this series so far (granted, I'm only on the third one at this time...). I really connected with Kaderin, our Valkyie heroine who has been blessed/cursed with a lack of any emotions. I always enjoy a good damaged, badass leading lady and Kaderin is both of these things. She's a warrior and a vampire hunter and I liked her attitude a lot.

And the hero, reluctant vampire Sebastian, was a terrific match for Kaderin. He was sensitive and hesitant but somehow at the same time he was gruff and coarse. I really enjoyed watching him come out of his shell as he realized that Kaderin was attracted to him. Both characters had really sad backgrounds and it was amazing to watch them fall in love and heal from their pasts.

The most exciting thing - besides all the hot smexy times, of course - is that this book is set during a competition for immortals called The Hie. Various immortal competitors chase down ancient relics or complete tasks for points toward a final prize. Very Amazing Race. It made for a super refreshing story because there was a lot of adventure amidst all the romance.

The fast pace, the adventure, and the smoldering - SMOLDERING - romance between two of my favorite characters made this book absolutely wonderful to read!

Notes on the Narrator: Robert Petkoff does it again. His Russian-esque accent for Sebastian rocks. I thought that his Scottish Brogue was the cream of the crop, but Sebastian's voice seriously rivals it! And he also manages to pull off lots of various accents and voices as he narrates other competitors in the Hie. HIGHLY recommended!

Recommended for fans of: vampires, reluctant heroes, the Amazing Race, adventure movies, chicks that kick ass, Valkyries, and world travel.

My reviews of other books in this series:

A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark #1)

  1. I swear Sebastian is my all time favorite vampire in this series.

  2. I thought I was going to miss the Scottish accent but I just really loved Kaderin and Sebastian! Can't wait for his brothers' stories...which I know MUST be coming!!! At least one of them better get a book!

  3. I love this series on audio. They're still missing a few books in the middle of the series and I'm hoping they get added soon. I've read the entire series, but I'm trying to listen in order, so waiting for this middle books to come out in audio.

    Great review.

  4. Isn't Robert just superb? How I have enjoyed revisiting this series on audio, I'm so glad you're enjoying them :)
Excellent review, you making me feel like re-visiting...would three reads be too much for a book?

  5. Glad you're enjoying this series on audio. It's on my auto-audio-buy list. I love Cole's writing and Robert's narration. They make a great partnership.
