Review: Storm Echo by Nalini Singh

Storm Echo
(Psy-Changeling: Trinity #6)
Nalini Singh
Release: August 9, 2022
Goodreads Amazon
NYT bestselling author Nalini Singh takes us into the hearts of two fractured people in a world on the brink of a psychic Armageddon . . .

Silence has fallen. The Psy are free to feel emotion. Free to love. But Silence was never a prison for Ivan Mercant. The biggest threat to his future lies dormant in his brain—a psychic monster that wants only to feed. And now, the brutal leash he’s kept on that monster is slipping. He prepared for this day, for the end of Ivan Mercant . . . but that was before he met Lei.

As primal as she is human, this wild changeling brings color into his life, laughter to his soul. Then the dream shatters in a rain of blood, in silent bodies in the snow. Lei is gone. Vanished without a trace . . . until he meets strangely familiar eyes across a busy San Francisco street.

Soleil Bijoux Garcia is a healer who has lost everything. She exists in a world of desolate aloneness . . . till the day she finds herself face-to-face with a lethal stranger. The animal who is her other half knows this man, but her memories are tattered fragments. Sorrow and a need for vengeance are all that drive her. Her mission? To kill the alpha of the DarkRiver leopard pack.

But fate has other plans. Soon, a deadly soldier who believes himself a monster and a broken healer might be all that stand between life and death for the entire Psy race.

Review:
I don't know how Nalini Singh does it but each new book in this series is just as good or better than the last one! I loved it so much! Not only did we get to see another Mercant fall in love, we got to revisit the DarkRiver pack! I love the leopards so much!

One of the things I'm loving about this Trinity arc is that we get to see the rare and unique Psy gifts that will hopefully help mend the PsyNet! I am finding them fascinating! And I'm loving seeing more Psy-Changeling pairings! I absolutely adored Lei and Ivan's romance! Even though their back stories tugged at my heartstrings. They both deserve each other after everything they've been through!

I'm not usually a fan of the amnesia trope but it is so nicely done in this book! I'm worried about the PsyNet. It's getting better in small increments but we really geot to see how the Scarab's are tearing it apart in this book. I'm still not sure how it can be saved but we're getting closer to an answer and loose threads from previous books are starting to be tied into the bigger picture. I want it to be known that I totally called the identity of The Architect.

I can't wait to see what happens next in this series! It's going to be a long wait for the next book. I foresee a whole series reread in my near future to bridge the gap.

Review: Archangel's Light by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Light
(Guild Hunter #14)
Nalini Singh
Release: October 26, 2021
Goodreads Amazon
Nalini Singh returns to the world of the Guild Hunters for the most highly anticipated novel of the beloved series—a love story so epic it’s been half a millennia in the making…

Illium and Aodhan. Aodhan and Illium. For centuries they’ve been inseparable: the best of friends, closer than brothers, companions of the heart. But that was before—before darkness befell Aodhan and shattered him, body, mind, and soul. Now, at long last, Aodhan is healing, but his new-found strength and independence may come at a devastating cost—his relationship with Illium.

As they serve side by side in China, a territory yet marked by the evil of its former archangel, the secret it holds nightmarish beyond imagining, things come to an explosive decision point. Illium and Aodhan must either walk away from the relationship that has defined them—or step forward into a future that promises a bond infinitely precious in the life of an immortal…but that demands a terrifying vulnerability from two badly bruised hearts.

Review:
This may be the first review where it has taken me months and several rereads to write. It was hands down one of my top five most anticipated books of 2021. I have been waiting for this book from the moment Illium and Aodhan appeared on page together. I can't tell you how long I have been shipping them together but I do know that it has been a long time. When I first heard that this book was going to feature them, I may have squealed very loudly in excitement at work. Then we got this gorgeous cover art that I want to have a print of to hang on my wall next to my fave artwork of Charles and Anna Cornick. Once I was approved for the eARC, I read the whole book in one sitting the same day I was approved.

The thing is this book was not what I was expecting. That's not unusual because I can rarely guess what's going to happen in a Nalini Singh book. I'm not going to lie. I was a bit disappointed after my first read through. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad. This book introduced a plotline and a new character that I am intrigued to see what happens in future books. And I adored seeing the flashbacks of tiny Aodhan and Illium and the genesis of their friendship. But it wasn't the romance I was expecting and hoping it would be. After a lot of thought and a couple of rereads, I decided that that was an okay thing.

This book is a very slow burn romance so if you're looking for a hot and steamy m/m romance this book isn't it. But what it is is a very intimate look at a friendship that has spanned centuries and many trials and how they have always been together. After my reread, I came to love this story immensely as we got to see glimpses of Sparkle and Bluebell that I never knew I needed. We finally get the story behind Aodhan's aversion to touch and how he went missing until he was found by the Seven. And that story broke my heart. We even got the story of Illium's fall from Illium and Aodhan's POV and it was heartbreaking as well.

These two characters have a lot of baggage and we know from previous books that they are have hit a rough patch in their friendship. The more I think about the more this book the more perfect it becomes. I can now see Nalini's genius in writing this slow burn of a romance. And every time I reread it this year, I was left with the feeling that this is just the start of their story. Hopefully, we'll get at least another book featuring these two where we can see their romance really take flight and get some steamy bits. I'm really hoping that the next book in this series is about Aodhan and Illium again so I can get more of the romance. Or at least have them be a prominent part of the next book because I NEED to see how Elena, Raphael, and the rest of the Seven react to this romance.

Review: Last Guard by Nalini Singh

Last Guard
(Psy-Changeling: Trinity #5)
Nalini Singh
Release: July 20, 2021
Goodreads Amazon
New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh returns to a world devastated by change in her award-winning Psy-Changeling Trinity series, where two people defined by their aloneness hold the fate of the Psy in their hands…

Termed merciless by some, and a robotic sociopath by others, Payal Rao is the perfect Psy: cardinal telekinetic, CEO of a major conglomerate, beautiful—and emotionless.

For Canto Mercant, family and loyalty are everything. A cardinal telepath deemed "imperfect" by his race due to a spinal injury, Canto cares for the opinions of very few—and ruthlessly protects those he claims as his own. Head of intel of the influential Mercant family, he prefers to remain a shadow in the Net, unknown and unseen. But Canto is also an Anchor, part of a secretive designation whose task it is to stabilize the PsyNet. Now that critical psychic network is dying, threatening to collapse and kill the entire Psy race with it.

To save those he loves, Canto needs the help of a woman bound to him by a dark past neither has been able to forget. A woman who is the most powerful Anchor of them all: Payal Rao. Neither is ready for the violent inferno about to ignite in the PsyNet…or the passionate madness that threatens to destroy them both.

Review:

Note: Because Last Guard is the fifth book in this new Trinity arc and the twentieth book in the Psy-Changeling universe as a whole I will try my best not to spoil previous books.

Y'all! Y'ALL. This book was so epic I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it even three reads later. If I wasn't already a diehard Nalini Singh fangirl, this book right here would have been the clincher. I can't stop thinking about the absolute wealth of awesome that Nalini gifted us in this book.

We got a neurodivergent heroine and a disabled hero! Both main characters are anchors! There is a queer side romance! We get more Bears! And more Mercants! Y'all! We were ridiculously blessed by this book!

I just want to live rent free in Nalini Singh's head because it has to be both an awesome and scary place. One of the things I love about this series is that a character or a minor reference in a previous book can become a main character or major plot point later in the series. Case in point, we now have a book where both main characters are anchors which, correct me if I'm wrong, were last mentioned briefly in Tangle of Need (Book 11).

The plot of the overall story arc is advancing at a fast clip with each book and we're learning more and more about the PsyNet and the whole situation with the Scarabs is giving me anxiety. As much as I love the interconnecting plot that links these books together, I absolutely adore the characters in this series! And y'all! I would die for Payal. She is everything! She may have skyrocketed into first place in my ranking of my favorite heroines in this series. Sorry, Zaira and Memory! She is the classic case of don't judge a book by its cover and I loved learning about her hidden depths as she and Canto fell in love. Also, all of her interactions with a certain cardinal based in Russia were amazing!

Oh! And Canto! He is the classic grumpy, protective hero who will do anything to protect those he claims as his own. It doesn't hurt that he is also the one in charge of the Mercant's network of spies. I loved him so much! He is super protective but he knows when to stand back and let Payal take the lead. He's supportive and irascible and is basically the Psy version of the bears. And speaking of the bears, I loved Canto's interactions with them as part of their family thanks to Silver mating with Valentin. I could read a whole book of the bears working on breaking down Canto's walls.

I loved so much about this book but I'm going to end my raving ramble here. If you haven't read this series, I would urge you to go and pick up the first book! This series is one of my all-time favorites but this new Trinity arc has gifted me with some of my favorite books and characters and I can't wait to see where Nalini takes this series next!

Release Day Review: Archangel's Sun by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Sun
(Guild Hunter #13)
Nalini Singh
Release: November 24, 2020
Goodreads Amazon
A horrifying secret rises in the aftermath of an archangelic war in New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s deadly and beautiful Guild Hunter world...

The Archangel of Death and the Archangel of Disease may be gone but their legacy of evil lives on—especially in Africa, where the shambling, rotting creatures called the reborn have gained a glimmer of vicious intelligence.

It is up to Titus, archangel of this vast continent, to stop the reborn from spreading across the world. Titus can’t do it alone, but of the surviving powerful angels and archangels, large numbers are wounded, while the rest are fighting a surge of murderous vampires.

There is no one left…but the Hummingbird. Old, powerful, her mind long a broken kaleidoscope. Now, she must stand at Titus’s side against a tide of death upon a discovery more chilling than any other. For the Archangel of Disease has left them one last terrible gift…

Review:
I will say now that if you're not caught up on the series, stop reading this post now. There will be spoilers for Archangel's War ahead. But man! Oh, man! This book was good and literally the most unexpected storyline I would never have predicted.

After the last book, I was curious to see where Nalini Singh was going to go with this series after the events of this last story arc wrapping up with the big showdown between Lijuan and Raphael. The big bad may be gone and the Cascade over but there is a lot of clean up to do now that the war is over. The whole world literally is devastated but more areas need help than others.

Every time I learn there's a new Guild Hunter book coming out I try to figure out if it will be about Elena and Raphael or one of the Seven. I had made bets on it being another Raphael and Elena book after the last book but I couldn't have been more wrong. I for sure didn't see the Hummingbird getting her own book at all even though I have been curious about her story since she went to New York to visit Illium.

The Hummingbird is one of angelkind's treasures and a truly neutral party. But she is broken and has been lost in the fog of her mind for centuries. Being appointed as the Guardian of Lumia and the repository of art found there has been slowly bringing her out of it and into the real world. She is picking up the pieces of herself and learning how to be Sharine again. And being sent to help Titus clear his territory of the Reborn and the other messes Charisemnon left behind is just the thing she needed to do that.

It was delightful watching her come into her own and going from this slightly fragile person to a strong fighter who knows her mind. I had always wondered about how she became how she was as the Hummingbird and I was a bit heartbroken for how hard her life was. I'm not completely sold that she had to lose herself in her mind but I will accept it.

As for the romance, I would never had paired her with Titus in a thousand years but it worked so well! When I learned this book was about Titus too, I was so excited! I've loved what bits and pieces we've learned about him as the series progressed and I couldn't wait to find out who this warrior archangel with the booming voice was! I really enjoyed him as a main character and I kind of liked seeing him get a kick in the butt from reality because of his stereotyping of the female gender as a whole was so wrong. It took Sharine coming on the scene to adjust his way of thinking.

I really enjoyed their banter and how they slowly came to care about each other as they worked together. It's definitely a slow burn as they learn to look past their preconceived notions about each other. I will say there were a few instances where I thought Sharine didn't treat Titus right but it didn't take away from the story too much. It takes most of the book for really anything romantic to happen. I won't say anymore about how that happens except that I loved how willing Titus was to wait for Sharine to be ready to be his. It was everything!

I will say that this book was not my favorite of the series but I still loved it. It would actually work as a good entry point for a newbie to come into the series. What I'm really excited about is that this book is that bridge book that is starting to set up a new arc for this series and I'm excited to see where that new batch of stories takes us.

I know I've said this with each of the last few books in the series but I seriously can't wait to see who the next book is about. I really want it to be Illium's book and I really want it to be him and Aodhan paired together. I don't think we'll get it because it's looking like Nalini is starting to set up Aodhan with someone else. Which is kind of disappointing because I really do feel like the whole series has been setting everything up for the two friends to end up together. Anyways, I think we're getting closer to either of them having their own book and I'm so beyond ready for it. I know I'll probably love whatever Nalini decides to do with their stories but I'm still going to keep my fingers crossed over here until we see how everything shakes out.

Review: Emerald Blaze by Ilona Andrews

Because Catalina won't rest until she stops the use of the illicit, power-granting serum that's tearing their world apart.

Review:
Every time I pick up an Ilona Andrews book I know I'm in for a ride and that I'm more likely than not going to love it a lot. And holy cow! Emerald Blaze was one heck of a ride! It's been over a month since I finished the book and I'm still reeling from all the twists and reveals! And I'm having problems putting my thoughts about the book in a coherent fashion to write a review without it being me all-caps yelling GO BUY THIS BOOK NOW AND THANK ME LATER! It was just so good!

Okay. Let's try to get all my fangirling into a review that makes sense.

Y'all. I'm just going to come out and say it. I think I love Catalina more than Nevada. And not just by a little bit and that's saying something because I love Nevada a whole lot. They are two very different characters and that is even more emphasized in this book when more context of what happened when Catalina became the Head of the House. I like how Gretl put it in her review on the VBC blog; one of the big differences between the two sisters is that Nevada is always after immediate results while Catalina is in it for the long game. And holy crap! Is Catalina in for the long game! I was blindsided by so many reveals in this book that it's making me want to go back and reread the whole series over to see what I missed in the previous books. I love this series so much!

This book was full of the trademark action scenes and compelling mystery that comes with reading an Ilona Andrews book but it felt way more emotional to me. Our characters aren't the same as when we saw them last in Sapphire Flames. Both Alessandro and Catalina have grown leaps and bounds and have changed for the better I think. She's grown into her ice queen head of house badass persona and Alessandro has been seriously humbled and isn't the same cocky guy from the last book. I'm loving them being together more and more!

As I said, this book was an emotional one for me. I was close to tears in a few places and not just because I was laughing so much. Honestly, I felt wrung out from the whole roller coaster ride this book was when I finished it. There's just so much that was done so incredibly well in this book that I could extol how wonderful it was for hours. But one of the things I loved the most in this was how the big bad was approached! I would have never in a thousand years been able to see that coming and it worked so freaking well into the story.

I don't know what else to say except "Go read this series if you haven't yet!". It's full of magic, action, and mayhem all centered around my favorite, snarky fictional family ever. I can't wait to see what shenanigans that Catalina, Alessandro, and the Baylor Clan get into in the next book! I will be eagerly waiting for it over here in my little corner of the internet. You know what? I'm probably going to need to reread the whole series a few times before the next book releases to past the time and to prepare myself. I'm not ready for the end of Catalina's story quite yet.

Release Day Review: Alpha Night by Nalini Singh

Alpha Night
(Psy-Changeling: Trinity #4)
Nalini Singh
Release: June 9, 2020
Goodreads Amazon
New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh returns to her breathtaking Psy-Changeling Trinity series with a mating that shouldn’t exist…

Alpha wolf Selenka Durev’s devotion to her pack is equaled only by her anger at anyone who would harm those under her care. That currently includes the empaths who’ve flowed into her city for a symposium that is a security nightmare, a powder keg just waiting for a match.

Ethan Night is an Arrow who isn’t an Arrow. Numb and disengaged from the world, he’s loyal only to himself. Assigned as part of the security force at a world-first symposium, he carries a dark agenda tied to the power-hungry and murderous Consortium. Then violence erupts and Ethan finds himself crashing into the heart and soul of an alpha wolf.

Mating at first sight is a myth, a fairytale. Yet Selenka’s wolf is resolute: Ethan Night, broken Arrow and a man capable of obsessive devotion, is the mate it has chosen. Even if the mating bond is full of static and not quite as it should be. Because Selenka’s new mate has a terrible secret, his mind surging with a power that is a creature of madness and death…

Review:
You all know how much I adore Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series and sometimes I can't contain help but gush about each new book in this series. I always know that I'm going to at least enjoy each one and I can never figure out how each new story is going to go. I'm constantly surprised with how much I fall in love with each new book and y'all, I freaking adored Alpha Night so much. In my opinion, the four books of this Trinity arc/spin-off have been some of the best books in the whole series and this one just might be my new favorite. I've reread it three times already and it just came out.

The book starts out at a symposium for the newly remembered E designation. The symposium is set in Kaleb's territory of Moscow and the StoneWater and BlackEdge packs have been brought in with the Arrows to provide security for the empaths. Enter in Selenka Durev, alpha of the BlackEdge wolves, and Ethan Night, TK Arrow, who are both manning security and come into contact with each other when an attack happens. Within minutes of dealing with the attack, they're mated.

Not only did we finally got a book about a female alpha but we got a book about a mating at first sight! These kinds of matings have been mentioned a few times in passing throughout the series but we've never seen one. There were several matings where the male knew the other was their mate but this is the first mating we've gotten one where both love interests accept the bond before they know each other. Plus, I'm a sucker for the pairings where one or more of the main characters are an Arrow so I freaking adored Selenka and Ethan together! I loved that were both devoted to each other from the first and were dedicated to making their mating work even though they were strangers at first.

There's a lot that's going on in this book. There's an attack on the symposium, several attacks on Selenka's pack, and Ethan is displaying all the signs of having the dreaded Scarab Syndrome and could be on the brink of losing his mind. That's quite a bit to handle on top of a surprise mating. I loved reading about Selenka and Ethan learning each other and coming together. I also enjoyed the overall plot and mystery of this book. I guessed a few of the outcomes but I was kept on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading. Which happened to be all in one sitting. I should know better by now not to start a Nalini Singh book before bed if I want to get any sleep.

I loved getting to know the BlackEdge pack and seeing some familiar faces from previous books! Selenka and Valentin's interactions were the best! I loved seeing them compare whose mate was more badass and bemoaning how vulnerable said badass mates were because of their psychic abilities. Actually all the interactions between the wolves and the bears were great! I really loved everything about this book. I’m pretty sure I was a literal embodiment of the heart eyes emoji each time I finished this book.

Overall, Alpha Night was an excellent addition to one of my favorite series. I can't wait to reread the story again and again over the coming years. Now on to speculating and trying to guess who will be the main characters of the next book. I really really want a book about the falcons or someone from Remi's pack or maybe we'll get to see more of BlackSea! I kind of have my fingers crossed that we get at least a novella about one or more of the relationships we see developing like Axl and Tamar or Arwen and Pavel or Nerida and Yuri. I especially want something or anything about what the heck is going on between Anthony and Nikita. It's going to be a long year of waiting that's for sure.

Release Day Review: The War Priest by Ann Aguirre

51469677. sy475 The War Priest
(Ars Numina #5)
Ann Aguirre
Release: April 22, 2020
Goodreads Amazon
ARC provided by the author
Dour. Dutiful. Dogged.

Personal tragedy drove Callum McRae to join the Order of Saint Casimir fifteen years ago; now he’s in charge of a hold he hasn’t lived in for years. Supplies are scarce, he has no knack for dealing with people, and the Gols are at the gates. To make matters worse, he’s also battling an attraction so powerful and forbidden that it imperils his very soul…

Canny. Cheerful. Charming.

Joss Bristow seems bright and cheerful, but she’s hiding a well of sorrow that fuels her music. She’s also prone to leaping before she looks, exactly how she ends up besieged at Burnt Amber. Though she wanted to get to know Callum better, she never imagined that falling for him could cost her life.

He’s the dark of night, and she’s the sun that shines just for him. Two wounded souls have never needed each other more, but between his holy vows and the devastation of war, the odds are stacked against them…
Review:

One of my favorite things about the Ars Numina series is the way Ann Aguirre shows a different part of its fascinating world in each book. In The War Priest, we see the bear shifter stronghold for the first time, as well as a closer look at the monks who have fought beside the shifters throughout the series. Callum, the hero, is torn between those two worlds, having joined the Order years ago but inheriting leadership of the bears upon his uncle's death earlier in the series.

The heroine Joss grew up in the cat shifter compound where book one is set, and is the cousin of its heroine Pru. She's impulsive and optimistic and the exact opposite of stoic Callum, at least on the surface. Their relationship is sort of a slow burn, in that it takes them a while to overcome the obstacles, though the attraction is there early on. Once they're together, the way they compliment each other is so satisfying.

The War Priest made for interesting pandemic reading as Joss ponders her role as an entertainer vs. those fighting on the front lines. At the same time Callum struggles with his commitment to the Order vs. his obligation to his people and his desire to be with Joss. I think both of their journeys become even more relatable than the author originally intended in the current context.

This story feels much more connected to the series plot than the previous book, The Shadow Warrior, which was kind of a side quest. I was also surprised by how happy and sunshine-y the ending of the book felt. But I realize now that I said the same thing at the end of the last book. All but one of the previous couples made an appearance. It does feel like the end of the series in sight now. (There's only one more book planned.) I can't wait to see what happens!

Review: Loose Ends by Morgan Brice

Loose Ends
(Badlands #3)
Morgan Brice
Release: December 30, 2019
Goodreads Amazon
Cold cases, old enemies, ex-lovers, and vengeful spirits are making life dangerous for psychic medium Simon Kincaide and his boyfriend, homicide detective Vic D'Amato.

The ghosts of Myrtle Beach are restless, trapped by love, secrets, scandals, and spells, keeping Simon busy protecting the living from the unhappy dead. Someone from Vic's past is out to destroy him and everyone he holds dear, and the high-profile trial of the first case Simon and Vic worked together puts them in the spotlight--and put a target on their backs. As a deadly trap closes around them, can Simon and Vic tie up the loose ends to stop the threat, or will they become the newest ghosts of the Grand Strand?

Loose Ends is an urban fantasy MM paranormal romance with spooky supernatural suspense, hot sex, hurt/comfort, feisty friends, found family, ghosts galore, and dark magic. It is part of a series but can be read as a standalone and features an evolving, established romantic relationship with all the feels. Intended for readers 18 years of age and older.

Review:
I know I'll have a great day when a new Morgan Brice book hits my kindle. I've completely fallen head over heels for her intertwining series and characters but my favorite by far is her Badlands series with Simon and Vic. I started this one before bed and meant to only read a couple chapters but I ended up devouring the whole thing in one sitting.

I was a little nervous going into this one after I read the synopsis. The ex-lover comes back into the picture has never been a favorite trope of mine but I loved how Morgan Brice approached it. No matter the WTFery that was going on in this story, Simon and Vic had each other's backs and were there to comfort and support one another. This series makes me want more romance books with established couples at the center.

The mystery was almost mundane in nature and I enjoyed that foil to the supernatural element with the riled up ghosts. I had an idea of what might be happening as I was reading but was only partially right. The ending had me almost in tears and I'm glad things didn't end on a cliffhanger. I was surprised with where the plot went but that's one of the reasons I've fell in love with Morgan Brice's books. I won't say more about the plot because this one is better if you go in more blind than not.

This one was a bit tame on the supernatural side of thing but I adored what we got. I love the paranormal aspect of Simon's psychic abilities and how they come to play in the investigations he gets involved in. I will always jump at the chance to see more of Simon's ghosts and learn more about them. I love the stories that we get with them even if they're not crucial to the plot like the statue ghosts in this one. It adds a certain charm to the story.

I loved this newest addition to what is becoming one of my favorite series! I can't recommend them enough. If you're looking for a riveting M/M paranormal romance thrillers, you need to pick up the Badlands books ASAP!

Reviewer's Note: Morgan Brice has two short stories, Cover Me and Night, that take place between books two and three in this series. I'd highly recommend reading them before starting this one. The author has them available for free on her Prolific Works page along with the Restless Nights short story that takes place before book two.
