Soooooo, what scares Amanda?
Top 5 things that scare the pants off me:
1. Spiders. This is such a cliché, until you see one up close. The way their legs all work independently and how fast they move—not to mention the fact they can BITE you in your sleep. Utterly terrifying!
2. Horror Movies. I can’t do them. When I was younger, I could almost stomach Freddy Krueger—almost. I never liked them, but I wasn’t balls-out scared. Now? If forced to watch something like American Horror Story on TV with my son, I watch it through splayed hands that never leave my face and thumbs plugging my ears. He’s decided I’m not good company, which is fine with me.
3. Snakes. Again cliché, but when I was a volunteer Park Ranger (I was!) in Utah (Canyonlands National Park!) I came across several rattlesnakes. When you see them in person it’s a whole different story. They’re totally mean-looking and move much faster than they should be able to. They rattle at you and can strike quicker than you can jump away. Get me out of there!
4. Heights. This never used to be an issue for me—until I had kids. Now if I’m with them, and we are, let’s say, hiking along the edge of a cliff (ßthis has happened more times than I’d like to admit) I have a visceral reaction. My gut clenches, I tremble, and most of the time I feel like vomiting. It’s a strange one, as I feel like I have no control over my reactions whatsoever, which kind of makes the entire ordeal more harrowing.
5. Haunted houses. Whether it be one for Halloween or a real live “this house is has ghosts” – get me out of there! I want no part. The haunted houses of Halloween as a kid were the WORST. People jumping out and coming into my personal space to terrify me—and I paid for it?? Once I was out, I always thought—why did I just do that? I think I went into two or three and that was enough for me. You know the girl on Ellen who Ellen sends into a haunted house every year for shits and giggles? That girl is me. If forced to do it now I would yell and swear and swat at anything that came near me. For a real haunted house? Again, no thank you. I did spend the weekend in an old family estate once and I didn’t sleep a WINK. It was awful. I kept thinking I was going to see something reflected in the mirror back at me. Luckily, I never did!
