Jaye's got a short scary story for you. Happy Halloween!

Phoenix Rising
By Jaye Wells

I am pinned to the ground. My hands and feet throb, but the stake through my heart burns like hellfire. I lift my head, watching the sky gradually lighten. My nemesis, the sun, spreads its pink wings across the horizon. Already, my eyes water and my skin feels coated in acid.

How the villagers trapped me remains a mystery. One minute, I feasted on the sweet blood of a virgin. The next, an angry horde carried me through the town and into the forest. Torchlight glinted off pitchforks and cruel faces as they gave me the vampire stigmata.

Now, I am alone, save the celestial demon rising in the east. Each second, the sky morphs from calming black into deadly blue. The skin on my face is dissolving. I grit my fangs and plan my revenge.

Intense heat consumes me in a burst of pleasure-pain. My soul breaks free and rises into the ether. Now, I am a bloodthirsty phoenix. I soar toward the ball of fire and taunt its impotent rays.

To the villagers, the scorched carcass below will be a prize. They will feast this day and on into the night. Virgins will feel safe again, and their mothers will sing to the gods.

Foolish mortals. They’ll soon learn the scorched pile of bone is naught but a memento mori.

Tonight, I shall make my home in the nubile body of one of those virgins. Then, the villagers will finally know the true meaning of terror.

Check out the latest release from Jaye Wells, the Sabina Kane prequel novella Fool's Gold. You can read my review here. Deadly Spells, next book in her Prospero's War Urban Fantasy series, releases in February.

Goldilox and the Three Scares Event and Giveaway: Delilah S. Dawson!

Welcome!

Here at Goldilox and the Three Weres we LOVE Halloween! So we wrangled up some willing authors and put together some fun posts and giveaways for you all!

Our theme for the event this year is What Scares You?

Check back every weekday between October 20th and October 31st to see which authors are visiting and the awesomeness they are each giving away!

Today's author is:
Delilah S. Dawson

Delilah S. Dawson's YA Southern Gothic Horror novel Servants of the Storm is a great Halloween read! It's cool and super-creepy. A big part of that is Kitty, Savannah's most fashionable night club owner and fox-eared demon. Delilah recently tracked her down and convinced her to answer some questions. Here's their interview.

Delilah: Hi, Kitty. Thanks for sitting down to answer some questions for readers of Servants of the Storm.
Kitty: Bored now.
Delilah: Watch a lot of Buffy, do you?
Kitty: I'm rolling my eyes. You can't tell, since they're all black, but I'm rolling them. I've been around a long time. I've seen everything. Except Angel. I never liked that guy.
Delilah: I can imagine. So what can you tell us about your club?
Kitty: Have you ever eaten at Golden Corral?
Delilah: Um, yes. Unfortunately.
Kitty: It's a lot like that, but for demons. And with better music. And fog machines. A taste of this, a sample of that. Every now and then, I get to bite off a finger just to shake things up.
Delilah: Does Josephine ever show up?
Kitty: *laughs* She wouldn't dare. Can you imagine that hideous albino alligator suit shuffling through the door and up to the bar for a drink? She may have the power, but she doesn't have the style. Never did. Which is probably why she likes Dawn so much. Dawn is like Paula Deen with owl feet and just as annoying. They probably sit around and do macrame with intestines. I'd rather party.
Delilah: So tell us about the first soul you took. Who was it?
Kitty: *shrugs* Like I care. I seem to recall there's a chapter of the bible that's mostly names and "begat." Pick a name. It didn't matter. We were born, and if we wanted to survive, we devoured. People were a lot filthier back then. Thank heavens for Bath and Body Works.
Delilah: Do you have a favorite 'flavor' of emotion?
Kitty: There's nothing as delicious as fear. It's sudden, it grabs you, and it hits bottom with a satisfying thunk. Although taking a man's virginity and soul, in that order, is my second favorite. Do you have any attractive young friends?
Delilah: Uh, no.
Kitty: A shame, that.
Delilah: What was your favorite soul?
Kitty: A certain very famous actor was in Savannah, filming a movie. I heard him say that life was like a box of chocolates, and I had to have his distal. I keep it in a candy box.
Delilah: So what's your endgame here?
Kitty: *waves finger* Tsk. A lady never tells. But I have plans.
Delilah: Why fox ears?
Kitty: Because cat ears would be too ironic and elephant ears would be inconvenient. I mean, why do you have a nose? Idiot.
Delilah: Look, I'm asking questions from your fans here...
Kitty: I'd love to meet them.
Delilah: NO WAY. I need them to buy my books so I can buy boots and cake.
Kitty: Well, that's entirely unselfish of you.
Delilah: Last question. Do you have any empathy or morality for humans?
Kitty: *stares and licks her lips* No more than a cattle rancher has for his herd. I want you healthy, stupid, pliant, and easily terrified. If I look remotely human to you, it's because camouflage is important to a predator. So my question is... why aren't you scared?
Delilah: *holds up hand*
Kitty: Damn.

Special thanks to the members of Josephine's Army, the Servants of the Storm Street Team, for supplying the questions. Find them on Facebook here.

Okay, Chelsea, what scares you?

I’ve made a decision. It should henceforth be illegal to post a picture of a spider on Facebook or twitter. Yes, this includes “cute” spiders, large spiders, spiders that have cool coloring, spiders from movies and anything dressed in a spider costume. And anything that remotely resembles a spider should be banned. BANNED, I TELL YOU.
I have no idea where my hatred/fear of spiders came from. When I was younger, Charlotte’s Web was my favorite movie. I used to catch spiders and keep them in jars as “pets.” I also did the same thing with grasshoppers, salamanders and snakes. My mother was so pleased. And then one day I was terrified of the crawly buggers. I nearly had a panic attack at a nature center because there was a tarantula in a tank across the room. I freak the hell out whenever I watch Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I would NEVER follow those damn spiders. No matter what.
Spiders aren’t bad creatures. They kill bugs, they make beautiful webs and they pretty much mind their own business. But I loathe them. LOATHE. I don’t like the way they crawl, I don’t like their hairy legs. God, I’m having heart palpitations just typing this.
I would love to get over my fear of spiders, but that would probably require immersion therapy. You know, where you expose yourself to the thing you fear until you’re not afraid of it. Hell to the no. I am perfectly fine being scared out of my mind for the rest of my life. Fear lets you know you’re alive.
So please, I beg you, if you know or love someone who’s arachnophobic, think before you post that picture of the gigantic spider you found in the drain this morning. Please.

I must confess that in searching online for a spider picture for the end of this post, I think I've caught Chelsea's fear of spiders...gross...

Excerpt

In an act of desperation, I summoned Angel—a thirteen- year- old gang kid who’d died in the ’90s—my best investigator. But he’d been AWOL for a couple of weeks. Ever since I found out he wasn’t exactly who he said was. From the first time we’d met, he told me all about his family, how his mother was a hairdresser and had a shop with his aunt. He told me about his nieces and nephews, his uncles and cousins. And it had all been a lie. He’d been posing as his best friend, the one who’d died the same fateful night he did, and pretending his friend’s mother, along with her entire family, was his.
Who could blame him? He’d come from nothing. Grew up with nothing. Unfortunately, he thought that just being Angel— the precious boy I’d grown to love the way someone who’s grown numb to the pain of tattoos learns to love them— wasn’t enough. As though he could ever fall short in my eyes. He could be a royal pain in my donk, but he was family.
So, I understood why he did what he did. Deep down, he knew that— but he was embarrassed nonetheless and hadn’t come around for a while. I was trying not to force the issue, but I needed advice. And grim reaper info.
He popped into the backseat, one foot on the hump thing in the middle of the floorboard, an elbow propped onto his knee as he, too, stared out the window to pout. I had a lot of pouters today. I really wanted to say, A pouter’s a doubter, but couldn’t think of how it applied to this situation.
“Hey, mister,” I said, hoping to brighten the somber mood.
“Who’s the babe?” he asked without looking at me or Jessica.
She turned around, fuming with a spark of indignity until she spotted him. He had his usual bandanna headband worn low over his brow with a smattering of peach fuzz along his young jaw. He’d been on the verge of becoming a man. No, he’d become a man the night he stopped his best friend from fi ring into the house of a rival gang member by crashing the car they were in and killing them both.
Jessica chilled instantly. “That’s rude,” she said, facing front again.
“Sorry.”
“You haven’t been around much,” I said, looking at him in the rearview. “No complaints about how you were in the middle of one of your nieces’ birthday parties or at a quinceañera when I summoned you?”
“You know they aren’t my family.”
I pulled Misery over, even though we were only a couple of blocks from our destination. Turning in my seat, I nailed him with my best nurturing glower. “Angel, you heard what Mrs. Garza said. You were like a son to her, and she welcomed you into her life with open arms.”
And she had. Mrs. Garza, who’d been hoping the presence she was feeling was her son, was not terribly disappointed when it turned out to be her son’s best friend. She’d loved Angel. I could tell. But getting him to face that fact now could be difficult. Stubborn little shit.

The Shadow Reader (Shadow Reader, #1) The Shattered Dark (Shadow Reader, #2) The Sharpest Blade (Shadow Reader, #3)

Sandy has graced us with a short Halloween story with Naito and Kelia, two beloved side characters from her Shadow Reader series. If you're unfamiliar with the series, this trilogy is one of my all time favorites...ENJOY!

Naito shivered when he stepped out of the In-Between, but the chill disappeared the instant he saw Kelia. She stood arms crossed, lips pressed, in the center of the room. Her silver eyes were locked on him, not on the fissure disappearing behind him or on Aren, who gave a short laugh and retreated to another room. Naito almost called him out for that. He’d saved Aren’s ass twice on that raid. The fae owed him.

Slowly, Naito unbuckled the belt that held his sword and knife. He kept his gaze on Kelia, not just because she was fast and fierce and could take him out easy if he let his guard down, but because she was Kelia - slender, spirited, sexy - and there’d been a few minutes on the raid when he’d thought he’d never see her again.

She remained silent when he tossed the weapons belt onto the couch, but her eyes narrowed. That was a good sign. It meant she was annoyed, not pissed off. The question was, what had he done?

“I thought you’d be in the Realm,” he said.

“No.” Her answer came quick and abrupt.

“Is it Lorn?” he asked. This time, she rolled her eyes. “It’s usually Lorn.”

“It hasn’t been Lorn since you threatened to duck tape cell phones to his head.”

The Crown of Phones, Naito had called it. If he ever got silver shackles on Lorn, he’d do it.

But the threat wasn’t what kept Lorn away. It was the fact that every time the fae came near, Naito took Kelia to bed. Since Lorn was her bond-mate, Kelia’s emotions had an effect on him. Distance helped diminish it, and Lorn tended to flee the second Naito kissed her.

He wanted to kiss her now, so he said, “I wish it was Lorn.”

She rolled her eyes again, but this time she was grinning.

“So what did I do?” he asked.

“It’s what you didn’t do,” she said. “You didn’t tell me it was Halloween.”

He had to bite back a laugh. He turned toward the kitchen in an attempt to hide a smile, filled a glass with water, then schooled his expression before he faced her again. She stood there, a deadly fighter who was charmingly obsessive about everything human.

Damn, he loved her.

“I didn’t know I was supposed to tell you about Halloween.” He leaned against the cabinet.

“Humans walk around dressed like monsters and vampires and fairytale characters. Of course you were supposed to. I don’t have a costume.”

“It’s a holiday for children, Kelia.”

“I saw costumes for adults.”

“You-” He looked out the window. It was still light outside. His mental clock might have been off - it was hard to keep track of the right time when fae fissured him to the Realm and back so often - but it looked too bright to be close to trick-or-treating time. She couldn’t have noticed costumes on the street, which meant…

“You went to the mall.”

Her eyes widened a fraction, then she pursed her lips in a I-didn’t-intend-to-reveal-that way.

He set his glass aside and moved toward her, scanning her for tech, which always accidentally fell into her hands when she went into stores. There wasn’t anything he could see, and there definitely wasn’t anything in the pockets of her tight black pants, but her shirt was loose and flowy. He ran his hands over her ribs.

“My edarratae are fine, Naito.”

“Lorn said-”

“I know what he said, but it’s fine. My magic is fine.”

She’d almost killed her mind with tech in an attempt to break her life-bond with Lorn. That had only been a few months ago. She needed to stay away from cell phones and computers and electricity. Hell, she shouldn’t even be in his house. The Realm would heal her faster.

She let out a frustrated groan and moved away.

He didn’t want to argue. He wanted her.

He followed her back into the living room, his gaze locked on her swaying hips. When she stopped and turned, he put his arms over her shoulders, locking her in place. “Why don’t you dress up as a fae?”

“Boring,” she said, accepting the change-of-subject-peace-offering.

He drew a finger along her jaw and watched tendrils of blue lightning flicker across her skin. “I don’t think it’s boring.”

“That’s because you’re human.”

“You like human.”

“I do,” she said, in a tone that sounded like she’d just come up with an idea.

He grinned. “You’d never pass for one of us. You’re too beautiful.”

She stuck her thumbs in her pockets and tilted her head to the side, trying her best to impersonate a human. It didn’t work. It made her look exotic and cute.

His grin widened. Kelia hated it when he called her cute.

She must have realized what he was thinking. She dropped her hands to her sides and stood straighter, chin jutted out in a dare.

He laughed. “What do you want to be for Halloween, Kelia?”

A slow smile curved her lips. “I bought a costume.”

“Bought?”

“Borrowed permanently.” She made a dismissive gesture then held out her hand. “It’s upstairs.”

Something glinted in her silver eyes. He curled his fingers over hers. “Am I going to like it?”

Lightning leapt from her skin to his then back again.

“Come see.”

She led him to their room. He closed the door as she reached into the closet and pulled out the…

… the costume. Woah.

He was almost certain the blue lightning on Kelia’s skin leapt into him from across the room.

“Do you like it?”

He loved it. He loved her.

“Put it on,” he said. “So I can rip it off.”

Thank you SO much to Sandy for that special story...LOVE Naito and Kelia so much!

Sandy graduated from Texas A&M University with a double major in political science and history. She thought about attending law school. Goldilox and the Three Scares Event and Giveaway: What Scares Us?

Today's Post is Brought To You By:
Goldilox, Gretl, and Rose Red

Soooooo, what scares Gretl?

As a child, I had nightmares about escalators. As soon as I stepped on, they would accelerate to what my ten-year-old self would surely call a hundred miles an hour. They would twist and turn into hills and drops and loop-de-loops as though they were roller coasters. And even though there were no cars to sit in or handles to hold, I never fell off, but was trapped on the rampaging escalator until I woke up.

In real life I would always hesitate before I stepped on to the escalator, as though I were in a game of Frogger and would die if I didn’t time it just right. I don’t think I ever actually expected those steps to whisk me away, but I never really trusted them.

In college, I started working in a mall and taking the escalators several times a day. Eventually I learned to board them without looking like I was playing the world’s strangest game of Double Dutch. I got over the fear, more or less through immersion therapy, and haven’t had the dreams in years.

But over the course of my many years in retail, I heard all the horror stories. Though maybe some of them are more like urban legends. Little boys who got their shoelaces caught between the steps and wound up with severed fingers. I even witnessed a few falls down the escalator. I learned that it’s really hard to get all the blood out from between those little grooves. And I’ve decided maybe it wasn’t such an unreasonable fear after all.

Soooooo, what scares Goldilox?

I have a lot of silly stupid fears. But the one we shall discuss today is the most terrifying and horrific of them all.

Cockroaches: Ewwwwwwww. I have seen a lot of authors during this event discuss their fear and hatred of spiders. But, for me, its all about the roaches. They are disgusting looking...and SO FAST!!! A friend's mom told us a story when I was little about waking up with a palmetto bug in her mouth one morning. IN HER EVER-LOVING MOUTH! For those of you who don't live in an area, like Florida, with every damn kind of roach under the sun, a palmetto bug is one type of cockroach and its the big one that flies. Can you imagine anything more horrible than waking up with that in your mouth!?!?
And then, several years ago when I first started teaching, a 'Bug Man' came to do a presentation at the school and picked me out of the crowd to hold a mystery creature. Being strong for my students, I went up to the front of the room the presentation was in and held my hands out in front of me as instructed. Which is when the man, whom was henceforth known as The Devil, placed two Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches in my hands. They were real, they were huge, and they really did HISS at a level I could clearly hear! They crawled UP AND DOWN MY HANDS AND ARMS and hissed the whole time! If I hadn't been terrified of roaches before, that pretty much solidified my terror as well as traumatized me.

Soooooo, what scares Rose Red?
Do you remember that part in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones is looking into the snake room? Do you remember what he says?
My sentiment exactly. I hate snakes! They creep me the heck out! I had an incident in college that made my fear of snakes ten times worse than what it was.

I went to university in the west so we had several biology professors who studied rattlesnakes. They would go out into the mountains surrounding the campus, trap the snakes, and would bring them back to study in what everyone referred to as the “Rattlesnake Room”. This room was home to about fifteen rattlesnakes living in their little glass aquariums. That room was nightmare inducing!

I worked for the campus' inventory division and my job required me to work with each department on campus to keep track of all of their computers and expensive equipment. This involved me having to go through all of their offices, closets, and storage rooms to scan all of the inventory bar codes. One day I was working with the biology department scanning all of the equipment and the last room left was the one with all of these snakes. It happened to be weigh in day for the snakes so they were taking them out of their tanks.

I was a bit nervous about the whole thing but they assured me that it was safe to be in there while they were handling the snakes. They were using snake-handling tongs to move them from their tanks to this giant metal tub. Well, the tongs broke midway between the tank and the tub. The result was one pissed off rattlesnake having free rein of the room because they didn't have a spare set of tongs to pick it back up. They quickly locked down the room so the snake wouldn't escape to terrorize the unsuspecting students down the hall. But when they locked the room down, they also locked us in there with the dratted thing.

It was one of the worst days of my life. I spent three hours on top of a table watching a mad rattlesnake slither angrily around the room while we waited for animal control to come catch it. After they caught the snake, it took twenty minutes for one of my friends who worked in the bio building to talk me off the table. That incident has scarred me for life. I can't even walk through the snake exhibits in the reptile houses at zoos without becoming a nervous wreck. *shudders*
