2019 Reading Challenges

I'm not having a good reading year! The second half of 2018 in particular has killed my reading mojo. I'm hoping that my 2019 reading challenges will help me get my groove back. If you have a challenge or method that works for you, let me know in the comments.

And if you're looking for a challenge to sign up for Feed Your Fiction Addiction has a list of 2019 Reading and Blogging Challenges. Here's what I'm doing:

Beat the Backlist is hosted by Austine at Novel Knight and focuses on reading books released in 2018 or prior. I thought about doing another challenge to catch up on overdue ARCs but then I realized they're all backlist books now. Hopefully I can catch up on some favorite series that I've fallen behind on as well.

I also love the new additions to the challenge this year - partner blogs!

I've been following Of Wonderland for a while now and really enjoy their blog. They host a monthly book club that is perfect for helping you decide what book to read next! Each month features a theme and discussions on Goodreads.

Book Rewind Thursday is a current feature hosted by BookCrushin with the goal to review backlist books each week. Join Kelly and Christy each week by sharing your backlist book reviews on Thursdays!

And The Beat the Backlist Weekly Photo Challenge is returning. It will run on Thursdays across all platforms. Follow the prompts posted on the NK instagram page each month and make sure to use the hashtag!

I hope to read at least 12 of these, but 24 would be better.

I think that one of the reasons I got burned out this year is that I rarely read anything that I didn't have to review. So I'm also doing the Library Love Challenge hosted by Angel's Guilty Pleasures. I go to the library on a regular basis but I've been bad about actually reading my library books this year. I hope that the challenge will help me balance my reading better.

I'm going for Dewey Decimal or at least 12 books. Bonus: these will likely also be backlist books and count for both challenges.

2018 will forever be known as the year of the reading slump for me. It officially was the worst reading year I've had in a long time. I read a third of what I normally do but didn't cut back the book shopping. At the time of this post, I have 299 unread books on my physical TBR right now and that's making me a bit uncomfortable. So most of my reading challenges are going to revolve around getting that number down while keeping up with the new releases I'll be buying. Like this last year, I'm going to keep it simple with the reading challenges and only participate in two.

Like Gretl, I'll also be participating in the Beat the Backlist challenge again. As I said earlier, I have a lot of unread physical books so my official goal for this challenge will be to read 30 books off my physical TBR pile that have been published prior to December 31, 2018. On top of that, I'm going to try to read as many of my backlist ebooks I can off my kindle because the amount of unread ebooks I have sitting on my kindle is kind of atrocious.

Rose Red's TBR

I'm not going to make a TBR for all 30 books but the above 12 are the ones that I really want to read in 2019. I'll be making more TBR Bingo cards in 2019 because I've found that they help keep me motivated to read.

And like every year, I'll be setting a Goodreads Reading Challenge goal. I like to set it to 52 books because I know that I can read at least one book a week. Hopefully I'll read more than that so my unofficial goal is to read more than 100 books.

Are you doing a reading challenge next year?
