Torn between two worlds.
Torn between two lives.

McKenzie Lewis’s ability to read the shadows has put her—and …those she loves—in harm’s way again and again. The violence must end, but will the cost of peace be more devastating than anyone ever imagined?

After ten years of turmoil, the life McKenzie has always longed for may finally be within her grasp. No one is swinging a sword at her head or asking her to track the fae, and she finally has a regular—albeit boring—job. But when a ruthless enemy strikes against her friends, McKenzie abandons her attempt at normalcy and rushes back to the Realm.

With the fae she loves and the fae she’s tied to pulling her in different directions, McKenzie must uncover the truth behind the war and accept the painful sacrifices that must be made to end it. Armed with dangerous secrets and with powerful allies at her side, her actions will either rip the Realm apart—or save it.
Review:

Man, I've loved this series. The Shadow Reader series is one of my favorites in urban fantasy and this final book, The Sharpest Blade is no exception. When we left McKenzie, Aren, and Kyol I was more than a little pissed. Events at the end of book two had led to McKenzie's near death and Kyol forming a life bond with her to save her life, which in turn led to Aren deciding he and McKenzie couldn't be together. Now, if you recall my previous reviews of this series, I have a wee tiny ridiculously in love with him crush on Aren. In the first book he won me over with his tousled hair, haphazard smile, and some of the most gripping and romantic quotes in the world. So, clearly, in the McKenzie/Aren/Kyol love triangle I have always been Team Aren. However, this is one love triangle where both men are equally suitable for the heroine and even though my heart fully belongs to Aren I must say that my heart breaks for Kyol many times in this series.

In The Sharpest Blade we get to see how the trio deals with the life bond. McKenzie is in love with Aren and hurting because he's keeping his distance, but Kyol can feel all of her emotions through the life bond and he's hurting from her rejection. Good lord, everyone is hurting in this book! There are a lot of emotions and tension in this one. I love it! (Something must be wrong with me...) The emotional turmoil is stressful and at times annoying, as it should be, but never overdone and made for some great moments. McKenzie shares wonderful scenes with both of the men in her life and the reader can really see what she saw in Kyol and what she sees in Aren (even though both men act like tools at varying times in this book).

Aside from a wonderful romance, there's also the adventure of the Fae Realm. Every time the characters enter the Realm, and honestly quite often when they're just minding their own business in the human world, there is a battle to be had. The seemingly never-ending plight of Lena and her supporters to officially win the throne makes for a truly engaging read. And, as in all battles, there are some losses. There was a moment in The Sharpest Blade where my Kindle almost met with dry wall, but I survived and came out happy by the end of the book.

Prepare yourself to swoon, to cry, to smile, to hold your breath, to lean in close to your book. Just prepare yourself.

Recommended for fans of: love triangles, Aren, Fae, Aren, combat with swords, Aren, and small ferret-like creatures that eat Goldfish. And Aren.

This review is based on an advance copy of the book provided by the publisher.

No Rest For the Wicked
(Immortals After Dark #2)
Author: Kresley Cole
Narrator: Robert Petkoff

A vampire soldier weary of life...

Centuries ago, Sebastian Wroth was turned into a vampire—a nightmare in his mind—against his will. Burdened with hatred and alone for ages, he sees little reason to live. Until an exquisite, fey creature comes to kill him, inadvertently saving him instead.

A valkyrie assassin dispatched to destroy him...

When Kaderin the Cold Hearted lost her two beloved sisters to a vampire attack long ago, a benevolent force deadened her sorrow—accidentally extinguishing all of her emotions. Yet whenever she encounters Sebastian, her feelings—particularly lust—emerge multiplied. For the first time, she's unable to complete a kill.

Competitors in a legendary hunt...

The prize of the month-long contest is powerful enough to change history, and Kaderin will do anything to win it for her sisters. Wanting only to win her, forever, Sebastian competes as well, taking every opportunity—as they travel to ancient tombs and through catacombs, seeking relics around the world—to use her new feelings to seduce her. But when forced to choose between the vampire she's falling for and reuniting her family, how can Kaderin live without either?
Review:

I want to be a Valkyie! This was my favorite in this series so far (granted, I'm only on the third one at this time...). I really connected with Kaderin, our Valkyie heroine who has been blessed/cursed with a lack of any emotions. I always enjoy a good damaged, badass leading lady and Kaderin is both of these things. She's a warrior and a vampire hunter and I liked her attitude a lot.

And the hero, reluctant vampire Sebastian, was a terrific match for Kaderin. He was sensitive and hesitant but somehow at the same time he was gruff and coarse. I really enjoyed watching him come out of his shell as he realized that Kaderin was attracted to him. Both characters had really sad backgrounds and it was amazing to watch them fall in love and heal from their pasts.

The most exciting thing - besides all the hot smexy times, of course - is that this book is set during a competition for immortals called The Hie. Various immortal competitors chase down ancient relics or complete tasks for points toward a final prize. Very Amazing Race. It made for a super refreshing story because there was a lot of adventure amidst all the romance.

The fast pace, the adventure, and the smoldering - SMOLDERING - romance between two of my favorite characters made this book absolutely wonderful to read!

Notes on the Narrator: Robert Petkoff does it again. His Russian-esque accent for Sebastian rocks. I thought that his Scottish Brogue was the cream of the crop, but Sebastian's voice seriously rivals it! And he also manages to pull off lots of various accents and voices as he narrates other competitors in the Hie. HIGHLY recommended!

Recommended for fans of: vampires, reluctant heroes, the Amazing Race, adventure movies, chicks that kick ass, Valkyries, and world travel.

Review:

So, I know everyone in the world of paranormal romance has read Cole's famous series, but I'm a newbie so I'm going to briefly review these as I read them! By the way, if you want to join me I'm on the audio for the third in the series as of this post so feel free to jump in!

A Hunger Like No Other is a delicious paranormal romance that is both sophisticated and sexy as hell. What's sets these books apart from other PNRs is two things. First, the ridiculously rich world building and the complicated characters. Cole's world includes the lore, which is vampires, Lykae (sort of werewolves that don't turn all the way into wolves), Valkyrie, fey, witches, demons, and some more smaller factions here and there. Each faction of paranormal being has a specific history and mythology that I have no idea how Cole keeps track of as she writes these books. Second, Cole's writing is really top notch. It's mature and won't make you feel like you're getting dumber while reading. She's an extremely talented author.

The only reason this gets 4 stars instead of the full 5 is because Emmaline is kind of annoying for at least half the book. She's very young and modern and extremely immature. But, like a great author can, Cole grows and changes Emmaline throughout the story and she changes for the better. In fact, for the final one-third of the book she's amazing. Lachlain is just sex on a stick. The end. Okay, okay, not the end. But he is wonderfully sexy and THE Alpha male if I've ever read one. He's completely out of his mind at the beginning of the book and I didn't know how I was going to like him, but like Emma he grows throughout the novel and as he falls deeper in love with Emmaline.

Notes on the Narrator: Oh my freaking god - have you HEARD Robert Petkoff's accents? Good grief. He is such a terrific narrator; so diverse! Admittedly, its hard for a man to really and truly sound like a woman so his narration for the women of the series is just alright (although still surprisingly good, considering). But his various accents and voices for the MEN...Whooo fan me now! He throws out a Scottish Brogue for Lachlain that is spot on and I can't imagine reading these books instead of listening. This audio is HIGHLY recommended!!!

Recommended for fans of: Scottish accents, Lykae/werewolves/shapeshifters, sexy sexy sexy times, intricate world and mythology, and ipods.

Review: One Grave At A Time by Jeaniene Frost

One Grave At A Time
(Night Huntress #6)

Having narrowly averted an (under)world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans' voodoo queen just keeps on giving-leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.
Review:

The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost is one of my favorite series in the world. Those first four books were epic! I love how the series straddles urban fantasy and paranormal romance, I love Bones' quips and sexy smiles, I love the Red Reaper, and I love Vlad and Ian. Even when book five paled a little in comparison to the rest of the series I still toted this series as a favorite and now that I've read book six, One Grave At A Time, I can proudly say that the Night Huntress series still reigns.

This book reads more UF and less romance - Bones lovers beware of only one truly hot sex scene - but I found myself really immersed in the story. The side trips into Vlad's world for two books kept the gang alive for me, but seeing Cat, Bones, Spade, Denise, Ian, Helsing, Cat's mother, Tate, Don, etc. again was like coming home.

In this one Cat and Bones face an evil and insane ghost, hell bent on purging the world of innocent women that he believes practice witchcraft. This was an interesting foe for the gang because, being a ghost, he presented several new challenges. It also allowed other ghosts from the series, Fabian and Don, to be very prevalent in the story. Kramer was a really evil bad guy with really evil plans so I felt like the danger for everyone in the story was real.

I saved this installment to read until right before the final Night Huntress book released, which is will do at the end of this month, and I'm glad I did because I didn't realize how much I missed Frost's merry/grumpy band of men and women. Now I get to read both books within weeks of each other! (And then curl up in a ball and cry while hugging all seven books, of course...).

Recommended for fans of: Bones, strong urban fantasy, chicks that kick ass, vampires, ghosts, and awesome series.

Daemon will do anything to get Katy back.

After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. Taking out anyone who stands in his way? Done. Burning down the whole world to save her? Gladly. Exposing his alien race to the world? With pleasure.

All Katy can do is survive.

Surrounded by enemies, the only way she can come out of this is to adapt. After all, there are sides of Daedalus that don’t seem entirely crazy, but the group’s goals are frightening and the truths they speak even more disturbing. Who are the real bad guys? Daedalus? Mankind? Or the Luxen?
Together, they can face anything.

But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on?

And will they even be together?
Review:

Origin is the fourth in the popular Lux series by one of my favorite young adult authors, Jennifer L. Armentrout. This was my first go around with audio for an Armentrout book and while it wasn't my favorite in the series, I still enjoyed it, especially Daemon's narration.

Origin moved a little slowly, for me at least, in the beginning. That's really the only reason this one gets four stars instead of five. That, and the fact that the narrator for Katy just didn't sound right. When we left Katy she had been shockingly trapped in the Daedelus facility after the gang's daring rescue of Beth. That was quite the heartbreaking cliffhanger at the end of Opal. In Origin we get to see Katy in the facility and its everything you expect.

This is an important book in the Lux series as there are tons of shocking revelations sprinkled throughout and some questions answered about Daedalus. Everything that happens is extremely vital to the series moving forward; I just wished things would have happened a little sooner. With Katy separated from the rest of the group for a while things just didn't feel the same.

But the second half of the book really shines. Man, does it shine. Several scorching scenes between Daemon and Katy, nonstop action, and all the great secondary characters! We get to see a lot more of Luke in Origin than in any previous book in the series and I love his character. He's very entertaining and unpredictable, and brings even more excitement to the scenes he's in. We are also introduced to a new character, Archer, who I'm interested in seeing in future books. And speaking of characters, get ready to be sad because we're going to lose some peeps, folks. This book is a game changer for Daemon, Katy, and the group in several ways and some of our friends won't be making it to book five. Armentrout isn't afraid to surprise readers in more ways than one.

And OF COURSE there is a ridiculous cliff hanger to leave you drooling for the next, and final, book in the Lux series.

Notes on the audio: Like I said above, the narrator for Katy didn't really impress me. She sounded like she was in pain and forcing out her words, which made sense when Katy was at the Daedelus facility, but I didn't understand why she sounded like that all the time. She just didn't have the spunk and spirit that made Daemon love her. But Rob Shapiro's Daemon is great. Good, strong voice and cocky comments delivered with spot on inflection and timing. I'd listen to another audio in this series, but its not my favorite audio.

Recommended for fans of: sci-fi that's not really sci-fi, Area 51, YA love stories, Armentrout's other series, little green alien dolls.

Review: Archangel's Legion by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Legion

Angels are falling from the sky in New York, struck down by a vicious, unknown force.

Vampires are dying impossibly of disease.

Guild hunter Elena Deveraux and the Archangel Raphael must discover the source of the wave of death before it engulfs their city and their people, leaving New York a ruin and Raphael’s Tower under siege by enemy archangels.

Yet even as they fight desperately to save the city, an even darker force is stirring, its chill eyes trained on New York…and on Raphael. Rivers of crimson and nightmares given flesh, the world will never again be the same…
Review:

Those of you who, like me, adore the Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series, have probably read a million other reviews of Archangel's Legion. I finished this book right after it was released, but had to sit on a review for a while because the words just wouldn't come. So, I'm reviewing Archangel's Legion now, but I'll keep it brief.

If you are new to this series, the first three books in Guild Hunter focus on Raphael and Elena, a powerhouse couple in the world of paranormal romance. Then we had two books focusing on members of Raphael's elite Seven; first Dmitri got his story, then Jason. So, when it was announced that Archangel's Legion would again focus on Raphael and Elena, readers cheered at the chance to see these two be the main focus again.

It was nice to see the two again as an established couple still going strong. Somehow, Singh manages to keep their story interesting even though they have long since passed the 'new relationship' stage. They are just an amazing, strong couple completely in love with each other. Singh doesn't pull anything with these two, she just lets them be what they are and let's us watch.

I love reading about Raphael's new and growing abilities and how the Cascade affects all of the archangels. The world in this series is really amazing and I enjoy getting lost in it. Both the disease killing vampires in the area and the strange supernatural events injuring angels were both really interesting plots and fit right along with one of the things that makes me love this series, Singh manages to combine beautiful romance with dark and grotesque mystery. I admit, I love darker UF and PNR and this series always delivers.

Archangel's Legion continues the well established and fan favorite Guild Hunter series with a well written mystery to solve and visits from all my old favorite characters in the series. Raphael and Elena are still going strong, and their romance is sexy and not at all boring. Singh's flowing and descriptive writing style is in a class above the usual PNR and I can't wait to read the next book!

Recommended for fans of: paranormal romance, dark UF and PNR, angels, Elena and Raphael.

This review is based on an advance copy of the book provided by the publisher.

Coastal Magic Featured Author Spotlight and Giveaway - Suzanne Johnson!

For more info about Coastal Magic, check out these links:

Suzanne Johnson is yet another fabulous author who will attending the Coastal Magic Convention in Daytona Beach this February! Below, she shares with us an interview with both Alex Warin and Jean Lafitte of the Sentinels of New Orleans series. Check out the hilarious interview then enter to win two books in Johnson's two series!

Royal Street (Sentinels of New Orleans, #1) River Road (Sentinels of New Orleans, #2) Elysian Fields (Sentinels of New Orleans, #3)

Mr. Dog and the Pirate:
An interview with Alex Warin and Jean Lafitte of the Sentinels of New Orleans series.

Thanks to a brutal holiday schedule, we accidentally double-booked interviews with Alex Warin, a shapeshifting enforcer who works for the wizards’ Congress of Elders, and undead French pirate Jean Lafitte, leader of the class of citizens known as the Historical Undead—formerly famous humans kept alive by the magic of human memory. They’ve agreed to put away their guns and talk about the current state of affairs in New Orleans now that the borders between the city and the Beyond have officially come down.

ALEX: I never said I’d put away my gun. I will put on the safety, if it makes you feel better, but it’ll slow me down if I have to shoot a pirate.

JEAN: Do not take extra measures on my behalf, Monsieur Chien.

ALEX: Stop calling me that. It means “Mr. Dog,” doesn’t it?

We’re doing an interview. Could the two of you hold off on the bickering?

ALEX: Men don’t bicker. They debate.

JEAN: Q’uest-ce que c’est “bicker”?

Alex, what’s the hardest part of your job as head of the new Division of Domestic Terror? Has it gotten any easier?

ALEX: Hell no. It’s getting worse and worse. I mean, back in the good old days if a prete came over from the Beyond and got out of line, I could just shoot him. Take Monsieur Pirate here—I blew him back to the Beyond at least once. Now we have to ne-GO-tiate. I hate that.

Jean, what about your new role as head of the Historical Undead? What are the biggest challenges, and is it true that your people are siding with the wizards?

JEAN: My people, as you call them, are quite uninterested in the affairs of the modern world and rely on me to make decisions for their benefit—although Monsieur William Faulkner has become fond of what your modern folk call a “computer.” And, Monsieur Chien, as you well know, I am a businessman, a trader of goods. I do not wish to be called a pirate.

ALEX: Potato, potahto.

JEAN (frowns): What have matters of cuisine to do with this?

Here’s a question for both of you. Do you think DJ makes a good sentinel? Not many women have that job, and not many Green Congress wizards. In fact, I think she’s one of only three in the world.

ALEX: (Grins) Green Congress wizards are geeky, aren’t they? I swear, DJ would research a problem to death if someone wasn’t always trying to shoot her or bite her or drown her. Not that she doesn’t bring a lot of that on herself, but give that woman a pot of coffee and a fast Internet connection and you could lock her in a room for hours before she realized she was trapped.

JEAN: Drusilla has far too many men to add complications to her life. He and Alex look at each other and nod. She also has an unfortunate tendency to enter situations that are utterly ridiculous and ill-advised; I speak here of her dalliance with the elves. He and Alex look at each other again, and nod.

ALEX (mutters): Damn, I hate it when we agree.

JEAN (mutters): Exactement.

The stakes are getting pretty high lately, especially with the elves. Do you foresee a peaceful resolution?

ALEX: A power struggle’s brewing and I’m not sure the people in a position to stop it have the guts to do what needs doing. I’m not optimistic. I think it’s going to get bad. Really bad.

JEAN: A man must have courage and place his convictions above his personal gain, and I do not believe the leaders of either the wizards or elves, the largest of the factions, have such qualities.

I think you two just agreed again.

ALEX: No, we didn’t.

JEAN: My apologies, but such a thing is not possible.

What are you most afraid of? Alex, you don’t seem to be afraid of much, frankly.

ALEX: Physically? No. I know what I’m doing and I can take care of myself.

JEAN: Pardon, mon petit chien rose, but perhaps you have forgotten some things.

ALEX: The pink dog thing was a fluke. At least I don’t talk like a cartoon skunk.

Moving right along. What about the elves, given the turn of events recently? They seem to be building a power base with DJ right in the middle.

ALEX: If I wouldn’t get hauled before the Interspecies Council I’d slaughter every elf I could get my hands on, starting with one in particular. Maybe two.

JEAN: Only if you reached them before myself. Perhaps we might slaughter them together.

Alex and Jean look at each other, and simultaneous say: “No/Non.”

So what’s up with DJ and Quince Randolph?

ALEX: He’s a jackass, but honestly, I think she can handle him.

You aren’t jealous, Alex?

ALEX: Of that overgrown Ken doll? (Laughs.) No, believe me it’s not like with her and this damned pirate. When DJ says she hates the pirate, she doesn’t mean it. She likes this scheming SOB. When DJ says she hates Quince Randolph, she means it. And she can be spiteful. Don’t tell her I said that.

Jean, what are your intentions toward DJ? Are you seriously in search of a relationship, or is she simply a useful business ally?

JEAN, with a sly smile: A gentleman does not reveal his intentions in private matters, n’est-ce pas?

ALEX: Which would only work if you were a gentleman.

Jean laughs and walks out. After a few minutes, Alex flips off the safety on his pistol and follows. Interviewer is staying out of it.
