Today I am participating in the DEITY blog tour! I have my review for the book (which was incredible and insane by the way) as well as a giveaway for some goodies from the publisher, Spencer Hill Press!
Deity
(Covenant #3)
Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release: November 6, 2012
Alexandria isn't sure she's going to make it to her eighteenth birthday--to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she's a goner... and so is Aiden.Review:
If that's not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"--which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time--she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.
But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she's caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed... and destroyed.
Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...
Holy bananas! This book is by far my favorite in the series so far and I could barely catch my breath while reading - Armentrout does it again!
In case you live in a cave, Deity is the third installment in the Covenant series, which centers on a tough and impulsive teen named Alex. The series combines mythology with young adult drama and exciting action. If you haven't started this series yet, what on earth are you waiting for? Be forewarned, there may be spoilers below from books one and two.
In Deity, Alex continues to grow as a character and starts to come to terms with all the mistakes she has made. She seems to mature just a bit, not enough to change her a whole lot, but enough that I can see where her character arc is going. Unfortunately, all this growth occurs while Alex is fighting off the beginning effects of becoming an Apollyon. These effects worry Alex and keep her coming transition constantly on her mind.
Her relationship with Seth is strained, to say the least, and she trusts him less and less as the plot goes on. In the previous book, Alex and Seth's relationship was sexy, bantering fun. But in Deity their relationship changes. Seth is clearly hiding things from Alex and that made me sad. In fact, a lot of things involving Seth made me sad while reading. I loved him in Pure (if you read my review of Pure on this blog you know that I was so in love with Seth!), but I can definitely say that I'm back on Team Aiden now. After reading this book, I don't see how I could still root for Seth and Alex. Sorry Seth. You kind of broke my heart in this book. Part of me still wants to hang on to my love for him though...he is certainly a 'tortured' character...
Aiden really stepped up his game in this one. I know a lot of people have always been on his side, but in Half-Blood I found him slightly boring and lackluster and in Pure I was so into Seth that Aiden got put on the back burner. BUT, in Deity Aiden is funny and sexy and proved himself worthy of our feisty Alex for me (finally)! They had a lot of great moments - thank heaven Armentrout cut down on the "Obviously I love you, but I can't be with you" moments. Those were killing me.
"You have this knee-jerk reaction to everything."
"What?"
He lowered an arm and tapped my knee. "It's the first initial response. The immediate thought when you hear something. You act on that instead of thinking things through."
I burrowed by cheek against his chest. "That's not a compliment."
His hand moved to the back of my neck, fingers tangling deep in the mess of hair at the nape of my neck. Wondering if he was aware of what he was doing, I held my breath. His hand tightened, holding me so I couldn't pull back too far. Not that I would - no matter how wrong it was, how dangerous or stupid.
"It's not an insult," he said softly. "It's just who you are. You don't stop to think of the danger, only what is right. But sometimes it's not...right."
The politics at the end of Pure carry over into this one. The scenes with the Council, Lucian, and Telly are all shocking and insane. I was constantly surprised at the level these people would stoop to! Their treatment of half-bloods and mortals is ridiculous and disgusting. Telly and Lucian especially drove me crazy. The relationship that Lucian has with Seth in this book frustrated me to no end. I wanted to shake Seth! And all those angering scenes alternated with tension-filled or heart warming scenes - I was on an emotional roller coaster from the first page till the last!
Some major secrets are reveled in this book and some things we have been waiting for finally happen. Things go topsy turvy in Alex's world and then things go from bad to worse. One high point of the book for me was the presence of some gods! We finally get to meet a handful of them as they interact with the main characters for various reasons. Some of the gods were awesome and hilarious, others were horrifying. One particular scene involving a god totally appalled me and I was totally surprised by this god's actions - the rest of the series will never be the same!
All of the side characters of the Covenant series are wonderful here. Although Lea plays a small role in this book, her change and growth throughout the books was like doing a 180. And Luke, Deacon, and Olivia? Love them all. There is a surprise appearance by somebody from a previous book - I won't spoil it for you but feel free to let your mind wander! The Sentinel, Leon, is absolutely fabulous in this book - I loved him! He plays a more important role and his scenes are great.
Armentrout has brought the Covenant series to full epic status with Deity. When I finished this book I was happy, shocked, saddened - every emotion under the sun. I literally cannot believe how good this book was - highly recommended!
That simple act stole my breath, my heart. But even as he pulled away, I realized that he couldn't steal something that he already had.
And be prepared, the cliffhanger ending will have you drooling for the next book. Like, literally sitting with your mouth open and drooling.
Recommended for fans of: The Vampire Academy series, the Mythos Academy series, mythology, Armentrout's other young adult books, love triangles, emotional roller coaters, and drooling.

Sounds like a great book! :)
ReplyDeleteI totally feel the same way as you! While I was always Team Aiden, Seth has a special place in my heart and I totally fell for him in Pure. Even though he's less of a presence in Deity, I still heart him so much and I can't wait to see where Jen takes his character.
ReplyDeleteAnd, oh, I love that quote you posted!!!!
