Follow Friday (41)

Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read

Guys, I'm back! I haven't done FF in FOREVER but this question sounded fun so here I am!

This week's question:

Activity! Who is your to-die-for book crush?
What do you think they look like?
Add an image to make us all happy.

If you want me to narrow it down to ONE book crush you'll have to tie me down and threaten me within an inch of my life...and even then I don't think I could do it...

Let's just say JZB and Bones are both a big DUH and half the people on the FF linky will pick them so I'll leave them off my list...but just know they are in my top five!

Terrible
Downside Ghosts series
“His hands on the sides of her face, on her neck, holding her there. "Chessie...shit, Chessie, I love you so bad." His teeth on her throat, biting hard, his lips soothing the spot. "So fucking much, so...so bad.”

Aren
Shadow Readers series
“If I were a good man,” he says, “I’d acknowledge that he is an honorable fae.....I’d step down and let you have the man you’ve always wanted, but, McKenzie, I’m not as good as him. I never will be, and I can’t step down. I’ll fight for the chance to be with you.”

Curran
Kane Daniels series
We stared at each other. The tiny space between us felt too hot. Muscles bulged on his naked frame. He looked feral.
Mad gold eyes stared into mine. "Do you miss me, Kate?"
I closed my eyes trying to shut him out. I could lie then we would be back to square one. Nothing would be resolved. I'd still be alone, hating him and wanting him.
He grabbed my shoulders and shook me once. "Do you miss me?"
I took the plunge. "Yes.”

Daemon
Lux series
"Daemon kissed like he was a man starving for water, taking long, breathless drafts. [...] Touching him, kissing him, was like having a fever all over again. I was on fire. My body burned. The world burned. Sparks flew."

Reyes
Charley Dabvidson series
"Take off that sweater and give me ten minutes, and you'll believe beyond a shadow of a doubt you're in love."

Who are your book crushes?

Review: Deadtown by Nancy Holzner

Deadtown
(Deadtown #1)
Nancy Holzner
Release: December 29, 2009
Goodreads   Amazon

They call it Deadtown: the city’s quarantined section for its inhuman and undead residents. Most humans stay far from its borders — but Victory Vaughn, Boston’s only professional demon slayer, isn’t exactly human…

Vicky’s demanding job keeping the city safe from all manner of monsters is one reason her relationship with workaholic lawyer (and werewolf) Alexander Kane is in constant limbo. Throw in a foolhardy zombie apprentice, a mysterious demon-plagued client, and a suspicious research facility that’s taken an unwelcome interest in her family, and Vicky’s love life has as much of a pulse as Deadtown’s citizens.

But now Vicky’s got bigger things to worry about. The Hellion who murdered her father ten years ago has somehow broken through Boston’s magical protections. The Hellion is a ruthless force of destruction with a personal grudge against Vicky, and she’s the only one who can stop the demon before it destroys the city and everyone in it.
Review:

Deadtown is the first in Nancy Holzner's action packed urban fantasy series of the same name. Before starting this series, I feared it would be on the lighter side, which I read but its not my favorite. I'm glad to report that is not the case here! Deadtown is grittier than I expected. Although not exactly dark, this book is a solid UF with all the classic elements.

The main character, Vicky Vaughn, is a Cerddorion shapes shifter. This is a fresh change as I don't think I've read a book with a main character who has these particular abilities. I certainly haven't read anything with Welsh mythology, which is what we get here. Vicky's a good MC, strong and smart and good at kicking ass. She works as a demon exterminator, freeing people from revenge demons, guilt demons, etc. She's a resident of Deadtown, the place where Boston's paranormals reside.

The world building in this book is great. After a plague killed hundreds of people and then brought them back to life as zombies, or "Previously Deceased Humans", all paranormals were outed including vampires, werewolves, and shapeshifters (although Vicky is the only one in her area). The government created a kind of a ghetto for them to live in and they are limited on where they can go. The treatment of all the paranormals and the political issues involved made me pity them, for sure.

There is a side plot involving a scientist interested in using paranormals as test subjects that was creepy and very real feeling. Vicky's ten year old niece figures into this side plot and I was sometimes more into this than the main plot.

Speaking of the main plot, it was very well-written and planned out. The Hellion demon that killed Vicky's father when she was younger has returned and Vicky must track him down, figure out what he's doing in Boston, find out how he got through the shield protecting Boston from his demon breed, discover who is pulling the Hellion's strings, and send the Hellion back to hell. It's a lot of work but somebody's got to do it. And Vicky does it well. Although there were occasional moments that faltered a little I really enjoyed this fast paced story. One such falter was basically every scene involving Vicky's teen zombie friend Tina, who is the reason behind a few catastrophes in the story and yet Vicky consistently goes easy on her. I liked Tina, but I think there should have been a little more consequence for all of Tin'a actions in the story, especially her theft of something important of Vicky's that could have led to Vicky's death and the destruction of Boston. Ya know, no biggie...

One area where this book struggled a bit was in the romance department. I wasn't a big fan of Vicky's sort of boyfriend, Kane. But that's okay cause there is a second choice! A human cop named Daniel kind of takes a liking to Vicky and a minor love triangle is in the works. I don't need sex in my UF to make me love it, but I do need those flirty glances or tension filled scenes and those were missing between Vicky and both love interests. The romance may get better as the series goes on, but I'll be reading the next book for the fast paced action and excellent world building instead.

Recommended for fans of: urban fantasy, action filled plot, paranormals creatures, and stories with demons.

I'm such a joiner! I have joined two reading challenges for 2012, something I didn't do last year. I'm very excited! First of all, I joined the 2012 TBR Pile Reading Challenge, hosted by Evie at Bookish. This challenge is to help motivate us readers to get through those books on our shelves we've been wanting to read but haven't gotten to yet.

You can choose your level of 'commitment' for this challenge, and I chose "A Sweet Kiss". That means I want to read 21 - 30 books from my TBR shelf! Here's my list:

1. Alpha (Shifters #6) by Rachel Vincent
2. The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff
3. My Soul to Save (Soul Screamers #2) by Rachel Vincent
4. Bitten (Women of the Otherworld #1) by Kelly Armstrong

18. City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments #3) by Cassandra Clare
19. City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments #4) by Cassandra Clare
20. Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices #1) by Cassandra Clare
21. Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices #2) by Cassandra Clare
22. Catching Fire (Hunger Games #2) by Suzanne Collins
23. Mockingjay (Hunger Games #3) by Suzanne Collins
25. Eternal Rider (Lords of Deliverance #1) by Larissa Ione
26. Immortal Rider (Lords of Deliverance #2) by Larissa Ione
27. Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between (Rhiannon's Law #1) by J.A. Saare
28. Wanderlust (Sirantha Jax #2) by Ann Aguirre
29. As Lie the Dead (Dreg City #2) by Kelly Meding

9/29 books read, 20 more to go! (I am NOT doing good here!)

I AM FAILING THIS ONE! I will definitely do this challenge again next year, and I've made it a goal to not request so many review books next year as well. There are A LOT of books on my shelf and on my Kindle that just aren't getting read.  :(

I also joined the 2012 Debut Author Challenge, hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren. For this one, I am going to read at least 12 YA books published by brand new authors or authors never published in YA before. I'm very excited about this one too!

1. Cinder (Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer
2. The Selection (The Selection #1) by Kiera Cass
3. Shadow and Bone (Grisha Trilogy #1) by Leigh Bardugo
4. The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna
5. Harbinger by Sara Wilson Etienne
6. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
7. Hemlock (Hemlock #1) by Kathleen Peacock
8. Masque of the Red Death (Masque of the Red Death #1) by Bethany Griffin
9. Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff
10. The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna
11. Defiance (Defiance #1) by C.J. Redwine

My #12 is complicated. The rules state the authors can be adult writers writing in the genre of YA for the first time. But my authors I read are such established authors I feel strange calling them debut authors, even though is is their first go at YA. So I'm counting them all as one, #12:

12. Poison Princess by Kresley Cole; Death and the Girl Next Door by Darynda Jones; and Iced by
      Karen Marie Moning

12/12 books read; CHALLENGE COMPLETE!

Alright, we can all see which challenge I'm sucking big time at. But that challenge will be more of my focus for 2013.

Review: Death and the Girl Next Door by Darynda Jones

Death and the Girl Next Door
(Darklight #1)
Darynda Jones
Release: October 2, 2012
Goodreads   Amazon
Ten years ago, Lorelei's parents disappeared without a trace. Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home. For Lorelei, life goes on.

High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be. Until the day the school's designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it, standing outside her house in the dark, night after night. Things get even more complicated when a new guy—terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach—comes to school. Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity. What does Jared know about her parents? Why does Cameron tell Jared he can't have Lorelei? And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real? Thrilling, sassy, sexy, and inventive, Darynda Jones's first foray into the world of teens will leave readers eager for the next installment.
Review:

If you have followed my reviews you may have noticed that I love Darynda Jones' adult series, Charley Davidson. Those books always get four and five stars from me and I typically gush about Jones' ability to combine humor, romance and mystery to no end. So when I heard she was writing a young adult series I figured there would be more gushing.

While I didn't hate this book, it didn't live up to what I thought it would be. Maybe my expectations were too high but I just didn't find the same magic with DEATH AND THE GIRL NEXT DOOR. In fact, even though I read this book prior to its release, I have held off for some time in writing a review because I was so confounded. So here we go.

DEATH AND THE GIRL NEXT DOOR follows Lorelei, who is supposed to be a high school student but often acts too innocent and silly to be one. Lorelei's attempts at humor just sounded immature to me. I enjoyed Lorelei's best friends, Brooklyn and Glitch, much more. They had the best one-liners in this book, in my opinion, and I loved all the scenes involving them. I also liked Cameron, who grows a lot throughout the course of this book. Even though we don't really know what the heck is going on with him for most of the plot. I immediately liked his attitude and fierceness.

Jared is the mysterious new guy who we are supposed to love but I found slightly boring. He's a typical YA genre hot-guy-hero and my feelings toward him were kind of Meh. The insta-love between Lorelei and Jared is of the worst kind - literal instant love. Lorelei sees him and BOOM she loves him. Its kind of like a little kid having a crush on a grown up - its weird and sudden and could they, like, have a conversation first? Jared's feelings are just as bad. His reasoning for saving Lorelei when he does is kind of stupid and there was some extreme eye rolling on my part.

While the plot was entertaining and I was interested in finding out what was going on, it lost its steam a bit for me with the introduction of a bunch of Christian mythology and religious stuff. I was less than thrilled with the church and preachiness.

I'm giving this book three stars, but they are shaky ones. I haven't decided if I will check out the next in the series yet, but I certainly still love Darynda Jones and her adult series.

Review: Mr. Real by Carolyn Crane

Mr. Real
(Code of Shadows #1)
Carolyn Crane
Release: October 20, 2012
Goodreads   Amazon
Alix Gordon is a woman who doesn’t take life too seriously. What’s the fun in that? So when she stumbles across occult software that can bring any computer image to life, she conjures up lots of awesome outfits and accessories. And then, on one drunken, horny night, she conjures up Sir Kendall, the sexy TV ad spy . . . who looks exactly like Paul Reinhardt, the super-sexy martial arts teacher who kicked her out of class three years ago.

Fighter Paul Reinhardt has good reason to hate Sir Kendall, the character he brought to life to land a part in a TV ad; he’d do anything to forget him. A cross country road trip seems just the thing . . . until Paul finds himself inexplicably drawn to Minnesota and is shocked to discover Sir Kendall - in the flesh - with the girl he’d once loved from afar. He barges into Alix and Sir Kendall’s love nest, determined to stop the madness - somehow.

But is superspy Sir Kendall transforming into something more dangerous anyone can imagine? And what will Sir Kendall do when Paul and Alix finally give into their mad lust for each other?
Review:

If you're like me you read that synopsis and went, "What the hell?" The concept for this book does sound a little crazy and farfetched - and it is. Thank goodness Carolyn Crane is a talented author who can pull off crazy. While this book doesn't come close to reaching the epicness of her Disillusionists Trilogy, I certainly enjoyed myself while reading.  MR. REAL was quirky, sexy, funny, and mysterious.

The idea is that a witch managed to somehow create a magical spell using binary code and could then use said spell to bring images from online to life. Alix, our main character, stumbles upon this software and begins having a good ole time entertaining herself by bringing to life things like necklaces and outfits. I have to say that I didn't love Alix. She is partially what keeps this book from getting a higher rating for me.

Alix is described as being a thicker girl who is average looking but sexy. She is the black sheep of her family, always the screw up, and really wants to prove herself. These are all qualities that should make me sympathize with this character, but instead I just found her annoying at times. Her decisions and the thought processes that led to them were often stupid. I wanted to love her, and I do admit that she grew on me a little as the story went along, but she is not a heroine that I could rally behind.

For example, after conjuring Sir Kendall and having a romp of a good time with him Alix's continued reasoning for why she doesn't want to send him back to imaginary land is just plain silly. Sir Kendall is not a real man - she just created him from a picture for heaven's sake - but she agonizes over allowing him to live here and try to be real. Then there is all this stress over what will happen when she sends him back to his own world, including what will happen with the "bad guy", Hyko. Umm...nothing will happen. Won't they go back to being pictures? I was so confused by all this talk of Sir Kendall's world. It made it sound like he was instead from an alternate reality, but that is not true.

A character I did love was Paul. He is the real man who played Sir Kendall in a TV commercial and is none too pleased to discover him brought to life. Turns out the character of Sir Kendall has ties to Paul's traumatic childhood and this causes him to hate him more than he should. Despite having this blinding hate toward him, Paul manages to be realistic and level headed about what to do with Sir Kendall and thank goodness for him! Paul is sexy as hell and has feelings for Alix that caused a misunderstanding between them years ago. I loved reading from his perspective occasionally because it just made me love him more.

By the way, Crane gives us a couple of wonderfully sexy scenes that prove she is no newbie to crafting some well-written sex, so consider this one a paranormal romance mystery, with the paranormal element being the magical computer software. Despite some plot points that caused confusion and my issues with the heroine, MR. REAL still managed to be a good read that I enjoyed. The second half of the book far surpassed the first (the faster pacing and the arrival of Paul helped with that) and I found myself getting wrapped up in what was going to happen to Sir Kendall in the end. I will certainly check out the next in this series.

Recommended for fans of: unusual plot concepts, spy books, MMA fighters, books with magic, and dresses with horse heads on them.

Waiting on Wednesday (39) - Crave the Darkness

Crave the Darkness
(Shaede Assassin #3)
Amanda Bonilla
Release: March 15, 2013
Goodreads   Amazon
Nothing comes easy for Darian. Her heightened powers make her indispensable to the Shaede Nation, but dangerous missions have driven her lover, Tyler, to his breaking point. Darian must salvage their bond, but a new assignment to protect Anya—a fellow Shaede and the first of their kind to become pregnant in centuries—stands in their way.

It doesn’t help that the two Shaedes are longtime rivals and share nothing besides mutual hatred. But when it becomes clear that someone—or something—is bent on destroying the expectant mother and her unborn child, Darian must put her feelings aside and track down Anya’s would-be assassin.

As she probes into Anya’s past, Darian digs up long-buried secrets—and a connection between Tyler and the mission that could destroy everything between them…

This is a great urban fantasy series that I love! It's got great action, lots of strong emotions, and an original paranormal element. Can't wait for book three!!!

What is your WOW pick this week?

Blog Tour: Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout + Giveaway!

Today I am participating in the DEITY blog tour! I have my review for the book (which was incredible and insane by the way) as well as a giveaway for some goodies from the publisher, Spencer Hill Press!

Deity
(Covenant #3)
Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release: November 6, 2012
Alexandria isn't sure she's going to make it to her eighteenth birthday--to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she's a goner... and so is Aiden.

If that's not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"--which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time--she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she's caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed... and destroyed.

Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...
Review:

Holy bananas! This book is by far my favorite in the series so far and I could barely catch my breath while reading - Armentrout does it again!

In case you live in a cave, Deity is the third installment in the Covenant series, which centers on a tough and impulsive teen named Alex. The series combines mythology with young adult drama and exciting action. If you haven't started this series yet, what on earth are you waiting for? Be forewarned, there may be spoilers below from books one and two.

In Deity, Alex continues to grow as a character and starts to come to terms with all the mistakes she has made. She seems to mature just a bit, not enough to change her a whole lot, but enough that I can see where her character arc is going. Unfortunately, all this growth occurs while Alex is fighting off the beginning effects of becoming an Apollyon. These effects worry Alex and keep her coming transition constantly on her mind.

Her relationship with Seth is strained, to say the least, and she trusts him less and less as the plot goes on. In the previous book, Alex and Seth's relationship was sexy, bantering fun. But in Deity their relationship changes. Seth is clearly hiding things from Alex and that made me sad. In fact, a lot of things involving Seth made me sad while reading. I loved him in Pure (if you read my review of Pure on this blog you know that I was so in love with Seth!), but I can definitely say that I'm back on Team Aiden now. After reading this book, I don't see how I could still root for Seth and Alex. Sorry Seth. You kind of broke my heart in this book. Part of me still wants to hang on to my love for him though...he is certainly a 'tortured' character...

Aiden really stepped up his game in this one. I know a lot of people have always been on his side, but in Half-Blood I found him slightly boring and lackluster and in Pure I was so into Seth that Aiden got put on the back burner. BUT, in Deity Aiden is funny and sexy and proved himself worthy of our feisty Alex for me (finally)! They had a lot of great moments - thank heaven Armentrout cut down on the "Obviously I love you, but I can't be with you" moments. Those were killing me.

"You have this knee-jerk reaction to everything."

"What?"

He lowered an arm and tapped my knee. "It's the first initial response. The immediate thought when you hear something. You act on that instead of thinking things through."

I burrowed by cheek against his chest. "That's not a compliment."

His hand moved to the back of my neck, fingers tangling deep in the mess of hair at the nape of my neck. Wondering if he was aware of what he was doing, I held my breath. His hand tightened, holding me so I couldn't pull back too far. Not that I would - no matter how wrong it was, how dangerous or stupid.

"It's not an insult," he said softly. "It's just who you are. You don't stop to think of the danger, only what is right. But sometimes it's not...right."

The politics at the end of Pure carry over into this one. The scenes with the Council, Lucian, and Telly are all shocking and insane. I was constantly surprised at the level these people would stoop to! Their treatment of half-bloods and mortals is ridiculous and disgusting. Telly and Lucian especially drove me crazy. The relationship that Lucian has with Seth in this book frustrated me to no end. I wanted to shake Seth! And all those angering scenes alternated with tension-filled or heart warming scenes - I was on an emotional roller coaster from the first page till the last!

Some major secrets are reveled in this book and some things we have been waiting for finally happen. Things go topsy turvy in Alex's world and then things go from bad to worse. One high point of the book for me was the presence of some gods! We finally get to meet a handful of them as they interact with the main characters for various reasons. Some of the gods were awesome and hilarious, others were horrifying. One particular scene involving a god totally appalled me and I was totally surprised by this god's actions - the rest of the series will never be the same!

All of the side characters of the Covenant series are wonderful here. Although Lea plays a small role in this book, her change and growth throughout the books was like doing a 180. And Luke, Deacon, and Olivia? Love them all. There is a surprise appearance by somebody from a previous book - I won't spoil it for you but feel free to let your mind wander! The Sentinel, Leon, is absolutely fabulous in this book - I loved him! He plays a more important role and his scenes are great.

Armentrout has brought the Covenant series to full epic status with Deity. When I finished this book I was happy, shocked, saddened - every emotion under the sun.  I literally cannot believe how good this book was - highly recommended!

That simple act stole my breath, my heart. But even as he pulled away, I realized that he couldn't steal something that he already had.

And be prepared, the cliffhanger ending will have you drooling for the next book. Like, literally sitting with your mouth open and drooling.

Recommended for fans of: The Vampire Academy series, the Mythos Academy series, mythology, Armentrout's other young adult books, love triangles, emotional roller coaters, and drooling.
