Today's Favorite Reviews: Book Obsessions

Head Rush
(Disillusionist Trilogy #3)
Carolyn Crane

Goodreads     Amazon

Notable Book Quotes:
"I used to say happiness was the absence of something - the absence of darkness, hate, fear. Especially fear. I thought, if I could get rid of my fear, life would be great...I see that I was wrong. Happiness isn't about getting rid of my fear. Happiness is when something outshines my fear."
With that I skate off from the man that was once my hero, leaving him there in the dark parking garage, with all his plans, hopes and dreams. This man I will attack and betray tonight. The man I just might die with.
"In some parts of the world they don't have a word for snow, because they don't know what it is. I never had a word for this. Love's too trite. It's more than that - just more".

Review Quotes:

Head Rush, the final book in this amazing trilogy. Carolyn Crane is a talented writer that really knows how to keep your head spinning. The surprises and twists keep coming, the love scenes are hot hot hot, and the first person point of view never gets annoying.

Oh Packard. What a wonderfully flawed hero. He is completely amazing in a totally messed up way.

I wanted the wrongs of book two righted immediately! But Crane makes us wait, showing us all the while just how powerful Otto is.

The Hour of Dust and Ashes
(Charlie Madigan #3)
Kelly Gay

Notable Book Quotes:
"Bare knuckles and butterflies, that's me."
“For the record,” he said, looking up at me with a crooked smile, “this is not how I pictured removing your pants for the first time.”
“That confidant, are we?”
His smiled filled out, deep and brimming with humor. “When something is this inevitable. Yes.”
He tossed my wet pants into the pile with the rest of my soiled clothes, then turned back and froze.
"You're wearing SpongeBob underwear."
Shit.
My gaze flew downward and my mortification was finally complete. "Emma got them for me...for my birthday." What the hell. I might as well get it over with. "Patrick is on my ass."

Review Quotes:

Speaking of super hot and sexy (nice segway, right?), the tension continues to build (and build and build and build...) between Hank and Charlie in this book. Gay writes the slowly developing romance that I love in urban fantasies. The sexual tension between these two is delicious, and I love how in each book we learn more and more about Hank.

Everything in Gay's world is completely believable, and that is a testament to her excellent writing and her wonderful imagination.

This series is insanely good and highly recommended!

The Shadow Reader
(McKenzie Lewis #1)
Sandy Williams

Goodreads     Amazon

Notable Book Quotes:
“If I were a good man,” he says, “I’d acknowledge that he is an honorable fae.....I’d step down and let you have the man you’ve always wanted, but, McKenzie, I’m not as good as him. I never will be, and I can’t step down. I’ll fight for the chance to be with you.”
"I dedicated my life to my king. I should have dedicated it to you".
“Fine," he says, his words coming out breathless. "I'll save your precious sword-master, McKenzie. But I will never, ever give you back to him.”
Review Quotes:

A-MAZ-ING. How is it possible that more people are not talking about this book? I stayed up till four in the morning two nights in a row to read this book.....it was that good. And this is from a debut author? Holy crap, I can't wait to see what else she has in store for us.

And the men.....oooooh, the men! The love triangle in this book is the very best kind - there is no right or wrong answer, no smarter choice.

Ahhhhhhhh!!! (That's my fangirl scream...). This book was simply amazing. You spend most of the time trying to decide who the bad guy is and who the good guy is, and how on earth this is going to end. The story was spellbinding, addictive, and reminiscent of Moning's Fever series. Even though I can see how a reader might be on either team here, I am literally in love with Aren. Add him to my book boyfriends list! And read this book......NOW!

Chasing Magic
(Downside Ghosts #5)
Stacia Kane

Notable Book Quotes:
"Warmth spread through her chest and up to her face, warmth that had nothing to do with pills or booze or anything else. It was trust heating her from the inside, making her feel like a real live person who mattered. The kind of trust she didn't think he gave to anyone else. The thought made something swell inside her, something wonderful and painful all of once. The kind of trust she knew she didn't deserve."
"Shit. You so fuckin pretty, Chessie. True thing. So. . . . .ain't even can breathe sometimes."
She was still who she was, after all. A junkie, a liar, someone who didn't know how to have a relationship, someone who really didn't deserve whatever happiness she managed to find. Someone terrified she'd do the wrong thing, say the wrong thing, terrified that she was going to fuck this up like she did everything else.
Review Quotes:

Stacia Kane knocks another one out of the park with my favorite installment so far in this gritty and intense urban fantasy series.

Kane's uncompromising portrayal of Chess is one of my favorite things about this series. I have never read another book that digs so deeply into the mind and soul of its main character. Kane certainly doesn't glorify drug use, but neither does she give Chess unrealistic characteristics or goals. Chess is Chess.

Terrible is just as charming and lovable in this book as always. Sometimes in between books in this series I forget why it is that I adore him so damn much, but Chasing Magic reminded me why I love me some Terrible. He loves Chess come hell or high water, and he sticks by her side knowing who and what she is, always there for her at her best or worst.

Stacia Kane could take a poo on the floor and call it "Pooping Magic" and I would almost certainly love it! She is an amazingly talented author that delivers again and again!

Three Days to Dead by Kelly Meding

Three Days to Dead
(Dreg City #1)
Kelly Meding
Release: November 4, 2009
Goodreads     Amazon
They’ll never see her coming. . . .

When Evangeline Stone wakes up naked and bruised on a cold slab at the morgue—in a stranger’s body, with no memory of who she is and how she got there—her troubles are only just beginning. Before that night she and the two other members of her Triad were the city’s star bounty hunters, mercilessly cleansing the city of the murderous creatures living in the shadows, from vampires to shape-shifters to trolls. Then something terrible happened that not only cost all three of them their lives but also convinced the city’s other Hunters that Evy was a traitor—and she can’t even remember what it was.
Now she’s a fugitive, piecing together her memory, trying to deal some serious justice—and discovering that she has only three days to solve her own murder before the reincarnation spell wears off. Because in three days Evy will die again—but this time there’s no second chance. . . .

Review:
It's not every day that someone sees a reanimated corpse. Likewise, it's not every day a person becomes a reanimated corpse. My day was decidedly much worse, so I did the first sensible thing that came to my mind. I stole her tennis shoes.
I'm going to give this book a subtitle - Three Days to Dead: Evy Takes a Beating.

The start to Meding's Dreg City series has nonstop action and a kickass heroine. This is a series I can't wait to read more of already! Obviously, I'm a little late to the game, as this was first released a few years ago. But better late than never, right?

Evy is a terrific leading lady with all the ass kicking skills you'd want out of your urban fantasy chick. Meding puts her in the unique position of waking up in someone else's body and gives her quite the constraining time limit of three days to figure out what happened to her. Evy is smart and tough as nails, but even she has to get used to being in this new body. Her new body isn't exactly the same as her old one and she has to get used to being taller and out of fighting shape.

I loved watching as Evy got used to this body. My only complaint is that she seemed to be pretty complacent about being in a different body for a large part of the book. I know that, in her world, the unusual is fairly normal, but it seems that being in a different body would take more of an emotional and psychological toll. Evy does finally breakdown and eventually come to terms with looking, sounding, walking (etc.) different, but I think it would have made sense for this to happen a little earlier in the story.

The world that Meding has created is riddled with paranormal creatures, from vampires to trolls to goblins, etc. Everything under the sun exists here and Evy's job as part of a task force of humans is to police those creatures when needed. Evy must now figure out why her team was murdered and who eventually killed her. The way that Meding set up the chapters, with the beginning of each telling the reader how much time Evy had left before, is very creative. Also creative is the way the readers discovers what happened leading up to Evy's death in bits and pieces as Evy remembers it herself.

A big part of the story is also Wyatt, the leader of Evy's former team and someone who has harbored feelings for Evy for a long time. He is equally strong and sensitive and is quite the ass kicker himself. He's the one who brought Evy back from the dead and he works with Evy to figure out the events leading up to her capture and death. Evy continually pushes away his affections, knowing how he feels about her but not willing to give in. Sometimes it was a bit heartbreaking to watch her push him away.
"This was [his] idea of a happy ending?" I asked. "Me dying, you putting yourself on the line to bring me back, and for what? To stop a war in a world that doesn't want us here? That wouldn't give a rat's ass if we both keeled over and died? Is that what we're fighting for?"

Wyatt shook his head. "No, I'm not fighting for this world. I'm fighting for you, because against my better judgement, Evangeline, I fell in love with you. With your sparkle and every and wit. With the way you used to cut your own hair, even though it was never straight or even. With the look on your face when you drank hot chocolate. For everything you put into your job and never got back from it."
This is a terrifically gritty and sordid read and I look forward to the rest of the series!

Recommended for fans of: dark urban fantasy, ass kickery, difficult relationships, original plots,  paranormal creatures.

Today's Favorite Reviews: Shockers!
Books that shocked me, scared me, tore out my soul, or made me sob.

Shocked me:

The First Days
(As the World Dies: A Zombie Trilogy #1)
Rhiannon Frater

Goodreads     Amazon

Notable Book Quotes:
So small. So very, very small. The fingers pressed under the front door of her home were so very small. She could not stop staring at those baby fingers straining frantically to reach her as she stood shivering on the porch.
Katie let the curtain fall back into place. Standing before the window, she felt herself let go of the old world and embrace the new. She would survive this. She would go on. That was all there was to it. She wouldn't give up without a fight. She would do whatever it took to survive.
The crux of the argument was that Jenni was a bloodthirsty psycho and would waste all of the ammo while Juan was too stupid to understand guns were made to be fired.
Review Quotes:

Well. So, that was awesome. Hold on a moment while I catch my breath from all the zombie killing.

Frater's pacing throughout the book is incredible, each time the story slowed down for a bit I thought, "Okay, here it is. They're safe for a little while and now it's going to get boring". Um, no. The pace never slowed to a halt or left me feeling bored. The story would slow for a nanosecond, and then off we would go!

Aside from the wonderful pacing and delicious zombie killing gore, what really shines here are the characters. I do not avidly read horror, so I was unsure about this series for a while. But what sets Frater apart from others in the genre is two significant things. First of all, her lead characters are women. Strong, stubborn, crazy women. Second of all, her story is really character driven. All of the main characters are well-written and fully developed.

Made me sob:

Prey
(Shifters #4)
Rachel Vincent

Notable Book Quotes:
“Faythe…?" The tremor in his voice broke my heart. Then understanding surfaced, and his tear-filled eyes searched mine desperately. "No. No," he whispered through clenched teeth. "This was not wrong. It’s the only thing I’ve done right in months. Don’t you dare regret this.”
Meow, meow, motherfucker.
I still loved Marc desperately and couldn’t imagine life without him. Jace was…something else. Something I could feel but couldn’t articulate. . . . . He was something that would have to wait.

Review Quotes:

This is the five star worthy installment in this series that I've been waiting for! There is A LOT going on in this book!

There are two HUGE surprises - one that had my jaw hitting my chest and my copy of Prey almost taking a flight across the room. This one is so much more emotional than previous books, and I know - that's hard to say. The level of emotion here was off the charts. For the middle 100 pages my stomach was tied in a huge knot.

This series just keeps getting more intense! I love the dramatic build up that is happening from book to book, as well as Vincent's change in scenery for each of them.

Tore out my soul:

This Is Not A Test
Courtney Summers

Goodreads     Amazon

Notable Book Quotes:
"I woke up and the last piece of my heart disappeared. I opened my eyes and I felt it go."
"I don't know how I'm going to do this, move through the hours like someone who wants to still be breathing when I had so firmly made up my mind to stop. I'm not supposed to be here and the world has ended and it's too stupid and sad for words and it's changed time; a second is a minute, a minute is an hour, an hour is a day, a day is a month, a month is a year, and a year - I can't be here that long."
"One of the dead - a girl - grabs my arm and pulls me to her and Rhys finally wakes up. He grabs my other arm and pulls me to him but as hard as he pulls, the dead girl pulls harder while the other four scramble around her for a piece......Rhys grabs the bat and smashes it against the dead girl's wrists, smashes it into the others, whatever he can do to get me free and I'm thinking about how it will never work, how this is it, when the dead girl's grip loosens."
Review Quotes:

I pulled This Is Not A Test off my bookshelf thinking I would read a little of it then watch some television and go to bed. Instead I read the whole book, cover to cover, in one sitting that lasted into the wee hours of the morning. I was so captivated by Sloane and this unique story that I just couldn't put it down. This Is Not A Test captured my heart (and several hours of my life) in the same vein as Fracture and Masque of the Red Death.

For Sloane, the zombies are just another way for her to die, and she sees death as a freedom that she welcomes. She harbors so much resentment for her sister, not to mention everything that's built up inside of her over living through years of abuse, that her inner most thoughts are all focused on when she can get away from the other survivors and finally end her life.

I've seen this book referred to as The Breakfast Club with zombies. That's pretty accurate because of the mash up of personalities of the six teens and the fact that they are stuck together inside a school. But really, that's where the similarities end. Because as the number of days the group stays in the school counts up, the strife among them grows and grows. There's pairing up and taking sides and violence.

Scared me:

The Restorer
(Graveyard Queen #1)
Amanda Stevens

Goodreads     Amazon

Notable Book Quotes:
"I shouldn't be here. With You. "You scare me." "I do?" I said. "Sometimes you make me forget." My heart was pounding so hard, I though it might burst in my chest. "Is that bad?" "I don't know. I've held on for so long....I'm not sure I'm ready to let go."
“There are a lot of things in this world to be afraid of, but a dead body isn't one of them.”
"I was nine when I saw my first ghost."

Review Quotes:

Amanda Stevens delivers an eerie murder mystery with the added plus of the paranormal in The Restorer.

Her partner in solving the grisly murders is John Devlin, who I imagined as a typical, old-school cop. Devlin is tough and gruff, but something about him attracts Amelia right away.

Stevens' ghosts are not of the Casper variety. They are spooky and scary. The idea that a ghost could attach itself to you and slowly suck away your happiness, your energy, and your life force is simply terrifying. There weren't many 'jump out and grab you moments', rather the scariness comes more from the constant feeling of creepiness throughout the novel.

Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews

Gunmetal Magic
(Kate Daniels #5.5)
Ilona Andrews
Release: July 31, 2012
Some people have everything figured out — Andrea Nash is not one of those people. After being kicked out of the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, Andrea's whole existence is in shambles. All she can do is try to put herself back together, something made easier by working for Cutting Edge, a small investigative firm owned by her best friend, Kate Daniels.
When several shapeshifters working for Raphael Medrano — the male alpha of Clan Bouda and Andrea's former lover — die unexpectedly at a dig site, Andrea is assigned to investigate ... and must work with Raphael. As her search for the killer leads her into the secret underbelly of supernatural Atlanta, Andrea knows that dealing with her feelings for Raphael might have to take a backseat to saving the world ...

Review:
"This is an HK UMP submachine gun. Renowned for its stopping power and reliability. Cyclic rate of fire: eight hundred rounds per minute. This means I can empty this thirty round clip into you in less than three seconds. At this range, I'll cut you in half." It wasn't strictly true, but it sounded good.

"You see what it says on the barrel?"

On the barrel, pretty white letters spelled out PARTY STARTER.

"You open your mouth again, and I'll get the party started."
Ilona Andrews knocks it out of the park. . . way WAY out of the park. . . with the smartly written and action-packed Gunmetal Magic. Those who worry about missing Kate in the driver's seat have no fear, Andrea is a similar narrator, as quick with her wit as she is on her feet. I mean, she is Kate's BFF after all. Do you think their friendship would work out if Andrea was sniveling and stupid? Surely not. Andrea is a terrific leading lady - tough as nails, badass with a gun, and with just the right amount of snark - and I hope we get more books from her point of view.

Andrea's man is Raphael, partial Alpha of the boulda clan and handsome as can be. When the story begins, Andrea and Raphael are broken up and Andrea is hurting. Throughout the book, it often seems like nothing is keeping these two apart except for stubbornness and pride. Sound familiar? Andrea and Raphael's story mimics Kate and Curran's, right down to the hilarious mating rituals of the Pack, but with enough individuality to stand on its own.
I pushed him against the door and kissed him again, sliding my body against his, nibbling, licking, purring in his arms. He went for it, hook, line, and sinker. I let him start stripping his jacket off, then broke away.

"I think the bars on the window have silver in them, don't you?"
He stopped, his tuxedo halfway off his shoulders.

"It's good that I brought gloves."

"Andrea!"
Andrea and Raphael must work together to solve the murders of four Pack members that were working for Raphael at the time of their murder. This takes them through many ups and downs together and we get to experience a wonderful combination of their quips back and forth, their longing for each other, and just how damn good they are together in a fight. The action is plentiful in Gunmetal Magic and Andrews doesn't hold back when its come to the shots, stabs, and gore. The action scenes are written just as well as everything else in this book and I was hooked from the first shotgun slug blast.

We learn more about Andrea is this book, which can be expected. I really loved digging into Andrea a little more, especially since we know she is a unique type of shapeshifter and she has issues with what she is. We get to learn a little more about her past and what has caused her to be the shifter she is today. She is a damaged character yearning to belong but refusing to let herself. I enjoyed riding along as her story came full circle.

Fans of the Kate Daniels series will not be disappointed by this installment in the series, especially since there are some very familiar faces lurking around. Kate and Curran make several appearances, with Kate even playing a fairly large role in the story toward its end. Asconio, the teenage boulda who just recently joined the series, is an important character seen throughout the book. Roman, dark wizard with a thing for Andrea, plays a big role here as well. Other, loved, side characters make appearances, including: Jim, Barabas, Derek, Julie, Aunt B, and Dr. Doolittle.
Kate smirked.

"What?"

"Your horse looks pink."

"So?"

"If you paste some stars on her butt, you'll be riding My Little Pony."

"Bugger off." I patted the mare's neck. "Don't listen to her, Sugar. You are the cutest horsey ever. The correct name for her color is strawberry roan, by the way."

"Strawberry Shortcake, more like it. Does Strawberry Shortcake know you stole her horse? She will be berry, berry angry with you."

I looked at her from under half-lowered eyelids. "I can shoot you right here, on this road, and nobody will ever find your body."
Terrific plot that moves quickly, smart and complicated characters that you will love, fantastic writing that gets its hooks in the reader, and top-notch world building. The Kate Daniels series is a must for urban fantasy fans and the sensational  Gunmetal Magic continues the trend.

Recommended for fans of: urban fantasy, guns, damaged characters, witty comebacks, weres and shapeshifters, and the Kate Daniels series.

Today's Favorite Reviews: Paranormal Romance

The Seduction of Phaeton Black
(Paranormal Investigator #1)
Jillian Stone

Goodreads     Amazon

Notable Book Quotes:
Truth be told, he was more than taken by her. Soon the little minx would capture him body and soul. From the very start she had wormed her way into his life and now he could hardly believe it himself. He was soft on Miss Jones. What a horrifying development this was.
"Do not fall in love with me, Miss Jones. And please do not come knocking at all hours of the day and night requesting my services." She snorted. "You are safe with me, for I do not believe in such affection. Men take love for granted; they do not prize it." He released her hands. "You claim to be a woman with no heart?" "A girl gives away the secrets of her heart, and a man is off down the lane for a toss up the neighbors skirt."
Review Quotes:

The Seduction of Phaeton Black is a sexy romp in the late 1880's London. With a bit of a Sherlock Holmes feel and some serious heat, this one is a historical paranormal romance keeper.

Phaeton and America have many hot sexual encounters, but keep their feelings for each other at arm's length for different reasons. The story is told from the alternating points of view of each, which sometimes bothers me in books but works well here. I loved reading what was going on inside each of their heads about each other and seeing their steamier moments from the different points of view was certainly fun.

Make no mistake, this PNR is heavy on the romance. Phaeton and America's trysts often had me fanning myself. Fans of PNR and "bodice rippers" should really get into Phaeton and America's story!

Firelight
(Darkest London #1)
Kristen Callihan

Notable Book Quotes:
"I am consumed," he whispered against her ear, and she shivered. "By you." Soft lips grazed her jaw in an agonizingly slow trail toward her waiting mouth. Her eyes squeezed tight. She could not bear it. The heat in her was fever bright. No part of him touched her, except that mouth. But oh, that mouth. It destroyed her composure as it moved with steady deliberation toward her lips.
"I love you. For one agonized moment, he feared he had said it out loud. His soul fairly shouted it. Three long years and not a day had passed when he hadn't thought about her. She'd filled his mind until she'd become the quintessence of womanly perfection, so much so that when he had come for her, he feared she might not live up to his impossible expectations. And she didn't. Yes, the real Miranda was brave, loyal, and pragmatic. She was also meddling, quarrelsome, and opinionated. The real Miranda was human, and by God, she took his breath away. He knew he would love her until the end of time. What was he to do?"
Review Quotes:

Firelight is an amazingly sexy, mysterious, passion-filled new release. New author, Kristen Callihan, combines paranormal and historical to create one of the best romances I've ever read.

Callihan gives us a slowly building romance between Archer and Miranda, teasing us with unbelievably sexy interludes between the two, but putting off "the big moment" until the reader is just dying for the two to get it on already!

Archer and Miranda are both damaged and both hide their own secrets. Their love grows slowly and their relationship builds throughout the story. The banter between the two, including many sexy quips from Archer, is almost as good as the romantic scenes.

Archangel's Blade
(Guild Hunter #4)
Nalini Singh

Goodreads     Amazon

Notable Book Quotes:
“In my time,” he said, “they believed in witches. Are you a witch, Honor, that you make me say these things to you?”
Causing him to rip open wounds that had stayed safely scabbed over for so long that, most of the time, he managed to forget they existed.
Her hands, so very, very gentle, continued to hold his face as she tugged him down until their foreheads touched.
“I’m no witch, Dmitri. If I was, I’d know how to fix you.”
“You,” she murmured, using both hands to undo his belt, “are the sexiest man I have ever met.”
He made her think bad thoughts simply by breathing.”
Review Quotes:

Singh manages to surpass the first three Guild Hunter books with her tale of redemption and healing.

I found myself loving Dmitri's dark and sexy outward personality, which was so different from the memories and feelings he kept inside his head. Honor was likable and believable as a tortured heroine trying to come to grips with life after her kidnapping. She wasn't wimpy and sullen, but rather a fierce hunter.

All in all, this was another awesome, dark, and sexy release by the talented Singh, whose beautiful writing style makes her paranormal romances stand out in the genre.
