The Deepest Poison is an exciting prequel novella to The Clockwork Dagger, which was one of my favorite books last year! It is told from the perspective of Miss Percival, Octavia’s mentor at the Medician Academy. She has come on the request of Octavia to the war camp on the front lines where Octavia is stationed. The soldiers are coming down with a mysterious malady that is killing hundreds.
This story gives us a glimpse into who Octavia is as a person and how she became the person that she is in the first book. This novella also shows us the point in which Miss Percival realizes the extent of Octavia’s talent and how she is not the best medician anymore. She starts to be jealous of the attention Octavia’s abilities garner and that jealousy turns to bitterness. And we saw in The Clockwork Dagger exactly what those feelings lead Miss Percival to do.
For a novella of 48 pages, it was extremely well written. I enjoyed it immensely! The mystery is excellently paced and the characters were well rounded. It really gives you a sense of who Octavia and Miss Percival really are. That's quite an accomplishment for so few pages. While you could read this before The Clockwork Dagger and not have it spoil the book for you, I’d recommend reading it after. The suspense of the first book is so much more enthralling if you do.
