When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

Review:

"And what if he did love you, Alex? What then? Would you be satisfied with being something he had to hide? Satisfied with lying to everyone and watching him pretend like he didn't care for you? Then, when you did get caught, would you be satisfied giving your life up for him?"

Whew. This book exhausted me. Armentrout packs punch after punch for poor Alex and my heart ached for her several times throughout this book. The first in this series was entertaining, fun, and romantic, but this sequel hammers home that this series is one to continue.

I love Alex. She is a spunky and impulsive character and when those traits lead to stupid mistakes my heart goes out to her. There are a lot of ups and downs in this one. It almost feels like the story is told in two parts: Before the Council Trip and During the Council Trip.

Before the trip to New York to testify before the Council, Alex deals with a series of emotional hardships, one of which includes her continuing feelings for Aiden, the pure blood she can never be with. Aiden is still training her and they are spending a lot of time together, but chivalrous Aiden refuses to cross that line with Alex.

"Ever since I've met you, I've wanted to break every rule." Aiden turned away, the muscles in his neck tensing. He sighed. "You'll become the center of someone's world one day. And he'll be the luckiest son of a bitch on this earth."

I must say that in this book I preferred Seth to Aiden. He was just more exciting and more fun, definitely the 'bad boy' between the two - and you guys know how I love my bad boys! He is a sexy and cocky character who toys with Alex to no end and I just love him!

Seth twisted up, rolling me onto my back in one fluid motion. Hovering above me, he used one arm to support himself. Only our legs touched, but it still felt like... well, like every part of us was still touching.

"Angel, that's like Apollyon foreplay right there."

"For real?"

"For real." He reached out and brushed a strand of hair off my cheek.

I swallowed. "I didn't know that. My bad, but that's kind of weird. Usually takes more with most guys." I had no idea why I just said that.

Seth's finger trailed over my cheek, down to my chin. "Does it, Angel? Well, what does it take?"

This was probably a conversation not to have with Seth, especially when he was practically lying on top of me. "I think you of all people would know."

His hand slipped to my neck. "I have a secret to tell you. It's not Apollyon foreplay; I'm just messing with you. I have no clue what that was."

"Gods, I hate you."

Aiden is loyal and a terrific guy, but Seth just drew my attention more, especially in the second half of the book, which is During the Council Trip. Seth is also in the book much more here than in book one. Armentrout also lets us see some different sides to Seth (that quote at the beginning of my review comes from him) and also lets us see what a physical attraction between him and Alex looks like - Umm...it looks hot.

"I can feel what you're feeling. And I know you want me to kiss you."

I grasped his arms. "It's not..."

"Not what?" He lifted his head, brushing his nose against mine.

"I..."

"Just let me kiss you."

Gods, I needed him to kiss me. I needed him to keep doing what he was doing with his hands.

Alex is always hesitant of letting herself get completely wrapped up in Seth, partially because she worries that its the Apollyon bond and not true feelings that attract them to each other and partially because of her lingering strong feelings for Aiden. Also she knows Seth is hiding something. Seth has secrets and we don't quite know what they are yet, but those secrets worry me. I suppose we will see what Seth's future holds in the next of the series.

There are a lot of twists and turns, some of them I saw coming and even so was still somehow shocked or saddened by. The change of setting was nice for this book, with most of the main characters traveling to New York to another Covenant for a good part of the plot. Seeing the Council sessions and meeting the different Council members really hit home how awful Alex's world treats half-bloods. We get to see some of the half-blood abuse in action and see those indentured and doped up half-blood servants that are always talked about. It really brings to life the fear that Alex has of becoming one of those servants under the effects of the elixir.

This is a fantastic sequel and makes me on the edge of my seat for book three! Armentrout's writing is smooth and easy to read and I love her characters. If you haven't checked this series out you should definitely do so - right now!


Recommended for fans of: Vampire Academy series, Mythos Academy series, Lux series, love triangles, and daring heroines.

Why I'm pushing it:

The Disillusionists Trilogy is nothing if not unique. The characters in this urban fantasy series are like disgruntled comic book heroes, with all sorts of crazy super powers. The world author Carolyn Crane created for her series is an original: some people have special superhuman abilities that allow them to do special things and these people can also use their powers to influence others. The first book in the series is wonderful, but its books two and three that made me a rabid Carolyn Crane fan. The twists! The turns! Oh man, this series ripped out my heart and stuffed it back inside over and over again!

The characters:

All the characters in the series are extremely complex, most of all our three lead characters: Justine, Packard, and Otto. Justine is an obsessive hypochondriac who thinks she will die any second of a rare brain disorder. Otto shares a similar fear but doesn't have the same superhuman ability as Justine to be able to push her fear into other people and use it as a weapon. Otto is both good and evil and even though he was the bane of my existence while reading he somehow manages to be a sympathetic character. Packard is...well, Packard. Let's give him his own section, shall we?

PACKARD!

Do you like a strong, sexy, and mysterious hero in your urban fantasy? How about a tortured hero type? Do you need some romance and hotness to keep the story going for you? Well I give you Packard! He is all that and a bag of chips (that's right, I said it...deal with it). He's one of my all time favorite fictional men, especially in books two and three!

Well there you have it! If you haven't read this series I highly recommend it!

Karen Marie Moning Signing + Signed Copy of ICED Giveaway!

I went to the Karen Marie Moning book signing in Sarasota, Florida and met the lady herself!

My BFF and fellow Fever series fan, Alicia, and I drove roughly an hour and a half from where we live to get to the signing. Then we waited in line for well over an hour, but it was well worth it!

When we finally got up to the table I got a tad bit nervous! After all, these authors whose books we adore are like celebrities! But Karen was incredibly nice. Here I am looking very overly excited with Karen Marie Moning:

Here is some info we found out from Karen during the signing:

• All three Dani books will come out, and then we will get two more Mac and Barrons books

• Karen wrote Dani with such a strong personality in the Fever series books because she was only in them a little of the time so she really wanted to make Dani's personality "punch". In Dani's trilogy, she pulled back on her personality a little because we were going to be reading from her point of view for quite a lot of the trilogy and it wasn't necessary to make her so extreme. This is good news for all who were worried about being annoyed by Dani in this spinoff series!

• Karen has often talked about how the entire plot for the Fever series came from a dream she had that pretty much laid out the series. I asked if the plot for Iced and the other Dani books were part of that dream. Nope! This trilogy and the two Mac and Barrons books were not a part of the original plan. But Karen did say that at about halfway through writing book three in the Fever series she had started to plan out the Dani books.

Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1: Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem -- staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

Review:

“It’s just words and words mean nothing. Only action does.”

       I am a big fan of Jennifer Armentrout's Lux series, so I'm not really sure what has taken me so long to read her Covenant series. Half - Blood is the first book in this young adult series and was a fast paced and fun read.

       One of the things that make Lux one of my favorite series also applies here: realistic teens whose dialogue, actions, and emotions feel real and not forced. Our heroine, Alex, is attracted to an older pure blood named Aiden. They clearly like each other despite the fact that they aren't allowed to be together, but they don't throw around the L word and talk about how they can't bare to live without each other like some other YA books. I appreciated that. It allows their relationship to grow throughout the series.

There were only a few inches between us, and if I moved just a little bit more, our lips would touch. I wondered what he would think about our future then. If I just kissed him, would he care about the rules? About what people would think?

       Alex is a good YA heroine, a little typical for the genre, but strong and smart nonetheless. She often rushes right in to a dangerous situation, using her emotions rather than thinking things through. Some of her decisions were a little rash, as part of her personality, but at least her decisions made sense. Aiden, the older Sentinel and object of Alex'a affection is a good match for her rashness. He is thoughtful and stoic and they are quite the pair. I like how their attraction and feelings for each other builds throughout the book and I'm interested to see where it goes on the next one.

“Jeez, how old are you?” I totally knew how old he was, but I wanted to pick.


Aiden cracked his neck. “I turn twenty-one in October.”


“Huh.” I shook the bottle. “So have you always been so…mature?”


His brows furrowed. “Mature?”


“Yeah, you sound like a dad.” I deepened my voice and tried to look stern. “‘Don’t look at me that way’ or else.”


Aiden blinked slowly. “I don’t sound like that and I didn’t say ‘or else.’”


“But if you had, what would the ‘or else’ be?” I hid my grin with the bottle.”

       Throwing a wrench in that relationship might be Seth. His character isn't introduced until about halfway through the book, but he is vital to the story and I have a feeling he will grow in importance as the series continues. I don't want to explain too specifically who and what he is, but I will say that his relationship with Alex is different than Aiden's. I'm curious where it will go, and in going into book two I see the possibility of a love triangle forming.

       Finally, I must address the similarities between this series and Vampire Academy. If you've read that series and then read this, you won't be able to stop yourself from comparing the two. They are extremely similar in setting, characters, villain, etc. I have read all six books in the VA series, and it certainly didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying this book. The similarities are unmissable, but so is the well-written and entertaining story.

Recommended for fans of: Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead, Mythos Academy series by Jennifer Estep, mythology, Armentrout's books, and young adult fantasy series.

I really enjoyed the first in this series, Dire Needs. It was fun and sexy PNR brain candy. The wolves in this series are similar to the vampires in the BDB series, but only time will tell if this series becomes as long-lasting as this one. So far, I'm a fan.

Review:

       The Shattered Dark is urban fantasy gold - nonstop action, complex world building, and an absorbing romance. I adored the first book in this series. In fact, I read it in two nights staying up until four in the morning. Reading this sequel wasn't much different. I read it in one day, finishing at 2 A.M. with a sigh. Sandy Williams really knows how to suck me in to her stories and I was completely emerged in McKenzie's world while reading.

       In The Shadow Reader, Williams set the pace for her series with an energetic plot that never faltered. I worried that book two would not be able to keep up with that pace, but as it turns out I had nothing to worry about. The fast pace continues in The Shattered Dark, starting off right away with run-for-your-life action, which in this series means sword fights and fae and appearing out of nowhere through fissures. There is plenty of action in this book, with our heroine alternating between daring to join the battle and being ushered off to safety.

       The rebels have defeated the previous king and won the castle, but now the real war has begun. The fae world is in an uproar and everyone is choosing sides between the rebels, including Aren, Lena, Naito and the others that McKenzie works with, the high nobles who oppose the rebels choice of Lena to supplant the king, and the 'remnants', the term the rebels use for those who still support the previous king's Court and are battling with the rebels. These battles provide for much of the story's action and travel from McKenzie's home town, to the Fae realm, to London, and back again.

       Amidst all the fighting we have McKenzie and Aren. In the previous book much of the draw was the love triangle between these two and Kyol, the sword master for the previous king and McKenzie's long-term love interest. We watched as their relationship dissolved and McKenzie and Aren's began to heat up. Williams did a terrific job of writing a love triangle that wasn't at all annoying. I was completely lost in what would happen next. In this book we see how McKenzie and Aren's relationship evolves and struggles during the war. All they both want to do is spend some time together and get to know each other more, but the war and everything going on doesn't allow this to happen.

"I'm not a mistake, McKenzie,"he says softly, stopping beside me.


 His voice is soothing, reassuring. My chest tightens, and a warm, tingling sensation rushes through me. That scares me. I've told myself to take this relationship slowly, but my heart refuses to listen. I'm growing too attached to him too quickly. I shouldn't be on the brink of falling in love with someone I know so little about. I shouldn't want to believe every word he says. That's what happened with Kyol. I loved him so blindly and so completely, I put my life on hold. I never questioned anything he told me, and I regret that so much.

       Aren remains one of my favorite men in urban fantasy, with his messy curls, lazy smile, and intense feelings for McKenzie. He says some of the most swoon-worthy things I've ever read.

Aren pulls me gently toward him.


"You told me you wanted time. I've given it to you, and I'll give you as long as you need, McKenzie. I love you." He tucks a lock of my hair behind my ear. "You're worth waiting a decade for."

       My one complaint about this book was the lack of time McKenzie and Aren were able to spend together romantically. But this is urban fantasy, not paranormal romance, and one of the things I love about this genre is how the romantic relationships move at a realistic pace and keep things interesting between the main couple. That is certainly the case with McKenzie and Aren.

The Shattered Dark was everything I wanted in this sequel. This remains one of my favorite series and after the bomb shell ending I am on the edge of my seat for book three. I highly recommend this book and this series!

“Nothing matters but him and us and this, the way he makes me feel like I’m everything to him. Sometime in the last month, he’s become everything to me.”

Recommended for fans of: urban fantasy, stories with Fae, sexy and brave heroes, action-packed plots, and smart heroines.

Sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.


In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.

Review:

     Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet continues a fantastic series with a snarky and hilarious heroine, a sexy as hell bad boy, and a few intriguing mysteries to solve. This series is one of my favorites and Fourth Grave exceeded my expectations.

     After the events of the previous book, Charley has some unresolved issues she is dealing with - well, not dealing with is more like it. It's a great arc for Charley's character development. At some point, what she does (solving mysteries, catching bad guys, running from demons...) had to catch up with her. In the last book, it finally did. At the start of Fourth Grave we meet a Charley-turned-hermit, afraid to do anything besides lay on her sofa and order ridiculous items from the home shopping channel. Somehow, Charley still manages to keep her funny and charming personality amidst her depression and agoraphobia. She remains one of the best and most original characters in the paranormal genre.

“For one week, all I could think about was drinking margaritas--well, that and running my tongue along Reyes's teeth--but I didn't have salt--or Reyes's teeth. I'd also lacked the energy to leave my apartment to get some--or the desire to stoop low enough to beg Reyes to let me lick his teeth after what he did--so I could only wish for a margarita. And dream of Reyes's teeth."

       Reyes is just as mysterious and maddening in this book. In a previous installment Charley refers to him as "chocolate-covered heroine" and I think that is a perfect description. He's the bad boy to end all bad boys. Now that Reyes is a corporeal being, meaning that we spend more time with him in an actual human body, we get to learn about his strengths and weaknesses. Charley handles him well, but Reyes handles Charley even better. He knows exactly what he does to her - all of his sly smiles, sexy grumbles, and hungry looks are proof of that.

“There is a fine line between love and hate, or haven’t you heard? Sometimes it’s hard to decipher exactly which emotion is strongest.”


I raised my chin. “I don’t love you either.”


He lowered his head and watched me from underneath his dark lashes. “Are you certain? Because the emotion pouring out of you every time I’m near you is certainly not disinterest.”


“That doesn’t mean it’s love.”


“It could be, I promise you. Take off that sweater and give me ten minutes, and you’ll believe beyond a shadow of a doubt you’re in love.”

       As the series goes on, we get to learn more about Charley's psychologist sister, Gemma. I love seeing their interactions because Gemma is so different from Charley and tries hard to understand her but just can't wrap her head around her. They don't bounce off of each other quite as easily as Charley and Cookie - who are still one of my favorite buddy pairs in the genre - but they still have some great moments in Fourth Grave as Gemma spends a lot of time with Charley and tries to help her heal.

"I borrowed a pair of your sweats. I ran into a convenience store with them on. I talked to neighbors out in their yard when I pulled up. And only after I got inside did I realize they had 'Exit Only' written across the back."


"You stole my favorite sweats?"


"I wanted to die."


"Its weird that sweats would make you suicidal. I'd analyze the crap out of that if I were you."

This is a wonderful series with a lot of things going for it and I'm always in a good mood when reading these books. Darynda Jones has the wonderful ability to infuse humor and lightness into serious situations, which gives this series just the right balance of dark and funny. There were lots of side plots happening in this book that I wish I had time to mention, but then this review would be pages and pages long! I will say, however, that all of my favorite characters make appearances, some longer than others, including Swopes, Artemis, Donavan, Uncle Ubie, and Cookie's daughter Amber.
