Review: The Omega Objection by G.L. Carriger

The Omega Objection
(San Andreas Shifters #1)
G.L. Carriger
Release: November 4, 2018
Goodreads Amazon
Every night Isaac wonders if the next shifter in his bar will be the werewolf sent to kill him.

The supernatural creatures of San Francisco love to visit Isaac the bartender. They never ask why they're drawn to him or why he has no scent. Until Tank.

Tank is always subservient to his pack and its needs, so when asked to take a side job as a bouncer, he's there. Then he meets Isaac. The man is an enigma - odorless, ridiculously sexy, and terrified.

Can Tank prove to Isaac that sometimes there are monsters worth running toward?

New York Times bestselling author Gail Carriger, writing as G. L. Carriger, brings you this charming gay romance featuring a gentle giant with a trampled heart and a man desperate to escape his past. Be warned, the San Andreas Shifter stories contain bad language, dirty deeds, and outright admiration for the Bay Area. Not for the faint of heart or tongue.

Review:
One of my favorite books of 2017 was The Sumage Solution so when I pre-ordered this book as soon as I heard it was up on Amazon. It took me a couple weeks to get a free evening but once I started it I tore through it. I do not regret either of these decisions. Returning to the wacky werewolf pack of San Francisco was a delight, especially with the new focus on characters Isaac and Tank.

This book was different from what I usually read. Not in the fact that it's a M/M romance but that it's a romance with a clear sub/dom thread. It's not so different in that I love Ms. Carriger and her writing. Honestly, it was very well done and it was a relief to read a book with Dom/Sub scenes without the S and M. One just wants control and another to be controlled.

Tank and Isaac were a delight to read about and the worldbuilding is so great! I loved Tank! He's big, strong, quiet, and insecure with nature opposite of what you'd expect from appearances. As much as I loved him, his insecurities and self-doubt to his place in the pack and Isaac's life grew a bit wearisome. It grating as it was, Carriger did a good job with portraying his sexuality. Isaac was also great! I loved how he was dominant in what is considered a submissive designation. Some of his insecurity was also frustrating but it a different way from Tank's. I just wanted to shake both of them at different points of the story.

I love a good queer romance but I'm absolutely adoring how layered the plot and worldbuilding in this series is! Not to mention, how multidimensional and unexpected the characters and their natures are! Carriger could have gone the expected ways with both of these characters, in terms of the dominant and submissive roles they each played. Instead, the reversal was a fun and refreshing discovery that absolutely worked for me.

The end was so warm and fuzzy and exactly what I wanted from the story. As much as I enjoyed the book, I didn't love it as much as the first one. I don't know if any pair can top Bryan and Max, but Tank and Isaac sure gave it a good shot. Although, it set up stuff for the next book and I can't wait to get my hands on it! I need Judd and Colin's book in my life! This series is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites in the queer romance category.
