Review: Reap the Wind by Karen Chance

Reap the Wind
(Cassie Palmer #7)
Karen Chance
Release: November 3, 2015
Goodreads Amazon
You’d think that being Chief Seer for the supernatural world would come with a few perks. But as Cassie Palmer has learned, being Pythia doesn’t mean you don’t have to do things the hard way. That’s why she finds herself on a rescue mission skipping through time—even though she doesn't entirely understand her dimension-bending new power.

Rescuing her friend John Pritkin should have been an in and out kind of deal, but with the near-immortal mage’s soul lost in time, Cassie has to hunt for it through the ages—with Pritkin’s demon dad in tow. He’s the only one who can reverse Pritkin’s curse, but with the guardians of the time-line dead set on stopping anyone from mucking about, Cassie will have to figure out how to get her friend back without ruffling too many feathers—or causing a world-ending paradox or two...
Review:
I love Cassie and Pritkin together! Even though Cassie's traveling back in time to a version of Pritkin that hasn't met her, they're still great together. Reap the Wind is chock full of those on-the-run-from-the-bad-guys-careening-out-of-control moments that they've perfected. The action never stops, which makes this book a lot of fun to read. You don't even notice that it's 500 pages long.

At the same time, I felt like not much happened in those 500 pages. I think that's just a pitfall of time travel stories, that a lot can happen in the past but the present day plot doesn't make any forward progress. Cassie does uncover some new information about her childhood, as well as Pritkin's during their adventures. Cassie also starts to gain new understanding of her powers. And she makes some decisions about her role in the supernatural world.

I like the fact that she finally seems to be acting like an adult, though trying to convince the vampires and mages to treat her like one is a whole other battle. Part of that coming of age is finally addressing some of the issues in her relationship with Mircea that have been lingering for a few books now. I also loved meeting more of the Fey, who have featured prominently in Chance's Dorina Bassarab series but not much in Cassie's books.

But at the end of the book, the one thing that I really wanted Cassie to accomplish was incomplete. She has a plan and newfound confidence to execute it, but it just felt like a big "to be continued." I'm glad the next book in the series is only a few months away - Ride the Storm releases in April. Still, fans of the series won't want to miss this exciting, action packed installment. It really is a lot of fun.

  1. I love this series, but I'm exhausted after reading it. There is so much action and never a break in it. I'm like you, I felt like a lot happened and not much happened all at the same time. Great review.
