Which F@!%ing Book Should I Read? 3

It's Monday, which is usually when we tell you to
But we're switching it up a little bit this week.

Two authors that I like just released SciFi romances. I kind of hope it's the start of a trend, since I've read a lot in the last few years about how male-dominated the SFF world is. I think that more women writing SciFi and new readers discovering it can only be a good thing. But here's my problem: I didn't particularly want to read those books, even after reviewers that I usually agree with loved them.

It's not that I don't like the genre. I'm watching Killjoys and Dark Matter and SyFy and enjoying those. (I actually thought when reading one of the book blurbs that I would watch it if it were a TV show.) It's not even that I don't want romance in my SciFi books. I've read more than one book Sherrilyn Kenyon's The League series.

Maybe I just need the right book to get me interested in reading SciFi.
So this week I'm asking

Sell Me on SciFi: Which F-ing Book should I read?

Here are some suggestions from my co-bloggers to get it started:

Guidance from Goldilox:
Shades of Treason (Anomaly #1) Obsidian (Lux, #1)
Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, #1)

The Anomoly series by Sandy Williams
Okay, so, to be fair I literally JUST finished the first, and only, book so far in this series, Shades of Treason. My review just went up a few days ago. But I had to include this on my list because I absolutely adored it. Solidly in the sci-fi genre, without any over-the-top technological mumbo jumbo, and full of action and romance that will appeal to urban fantasy lovers, I highly recommend this if you want to try an adult sci-fi book.

The Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Alright readers, hands up if you kind of forgot this series was science fiction. The Lux series and the first book, Obsidian, blew me away and this series was one of the first YAs that I came to love and adore. The series focuses on an alien family and their tribulations on Earth, along with a pretty darn steamy romance for a young adult series. Daemon Black...SWOON. It also has smart wit and banter throughout. This is definitely the least sci-fi of my list, so a terrific choice for beginners wary of the genre.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyers
I LOVE this series. Each book in this four book series focuses on a futuristic, sci-fi reimagining of a famous fairy tale character, beginning with book one, Cinder. While this is also YA, this series has much more science and technology in it, although I don't think it's over the top at all. I love how we still get to read from the POV's of previous books' characters in each installment and how everyone's stories weave together. The romances, the side characters...its all amazing and well thought out. Undeniably, a good series to start with.

The Sirantha Jax series by Ann Aguirre
This series is, without a doubt, for the braver or more advanced sci-fi reader. The first book in the series, Grimspace, was my first real adventure into sci-fi a few years ago and it did make my head spin a little. However, once I got into the story I was completely hooked. The MC is a totally damaged heroine and the romance will take you on a beautiful and heartbreaking ride (think Chess and Terrible, Mac and Barrons...its a bumpy freaking ride). There's a ton of action and even more of that technological mumbo jumbo I spoke of earlier. This one is not for the faint of heart, but definitely worth the experience.

Recs From Rose Red:

The Martian by Andy Weir
This book has been getting lots of hype lately since it has a movie coming out this fall. Let me tell you, this book deserves every bit of the hype! It was amazing! If you haven’t read it yet, quit reading this and go get it! Seriously. This book is all about Mark Watney and how he is trying to survive on Mars after being left behind by his crew during a freak dust storm. I just can’t even tell you how much I loved this book! And Mark has definitely made my list of favorite male characters ever. The guy is stranded on Mars.. with no one. Does he cry? Well, only sometimes. Does he fight against the planet from hell? Heck yes! But it's not as grim a story as you'd think it would be. It's quite hilarious and is really action-packed! There were a few chapters where I was literally on the edge of my seat because it was so intense. This is a sci-fi book I'd totally recommend to everyone!

The Katherine 'Kitty' Katt Series by Gini Koch
This series is funny! I mean really, truly funny! From the very first page, you laugh out loud and barely ever stop. The situations are so out there and the dialogue is somewhat campy at times that you can’t help but truly indulge your imagination. It’s not a corny or cheesy book or anything like that. Don’t get me wrong. It’s at times ridiculous, quirky, and just plain delightful! It's different from lot of the stuff being written now a days. The cast of characters just makes this book even better! There is SO much great snark and witty one-liners in this book! Seriously, how can you not love a book that has hot Armani-wearing aliens, Area 51, science, and comic book references? It's definitely a book I'd recommend if you want a light, funny sci-fi romance.

The Dire Earth Cycle by Jason Hough
This series is freaking amazing! It's a trip into the future in a post-apocalyptic world decimated by a “virus” delivered by unseen space aliens, who were ‘benevolent’ enough to create a “safe zone” in Darwin, Australia. There are a few people who are immune to the virus but most of those exposed become crazed zombie-like creatures. For those who do not have immunity, they must stay within the “aura” of Darwin. Like any safe place in a post-apocalyptic world, the city soon becomes overrun with citizens and short on the basic necessities of life such as food, water, and clean air. Everything about this series is awesome! It reminded me of all the reasons why I love the sci-fi genre! You all need to read it!

The Paradox Trilogy by Rachel Bach
This series, guys! This series! It's like Rachael Bach wrote it just for me. It's everything I love to have in a sci-fi book. It's light, adventurous, and full of people with armored power suits. Plus there's a romance! Devi Morris is a mercenary who has been clearing out nasty alien pirate nests and she is damn good at her job. But she doesn’t want to be good, she wants to be the best. Her goal is to become a Devastator, a member of the elite guard of the god-emperor himself. She signs on for a year with The Glorious Fool, a seemingly inconspicuous trade ship with a history of promotion for former guards. Of course we all know that the ship will provide a few surprises and just may be more than it seems, don’t we? This is another book that reminded me of just how much I love a good space opera!

  2. The Martian is phenomenal, especially on audio. I just read Final Protocol by J.C. Daniels. It was really good, but short and very dark. I also enjoyed Jenna Black's Replica Trilogy. It is YA SciFi. Good luck finding something.
