Halloween Guest Post: Kristi Charish on Zombie Love

Happy Halloween! We have a treat for you today - BRAINS! Wait, no that's a treat for the zombies. But we have Kristi Charish, author of the Kincaid Strange series, here to talk about why we love those zombies.

We also loved The Voodoo Killings, the first book in the Kincaid Strange series, and its unique twist on zombies and necromancy. Check out our review here. Book two, Lipstick Voodoo, releases in January but we've got a chance to win an early copy at the end of the post.

Zombie Love: Our Everlasting Obsession and Love of All Things Zombie

Ghosts, werewolves, vampires, aliens. They’ve all had their high moment in entertainment and pop culture. Teen Wolf in the 80s, Interview with the Vampire, Ghost, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the 90s, Vampire Academy and Twilight in the oughts and teens. But they all seem to ebb and wane in their popularity. So much so it’s become a predictable, nay, expected cycle of monster roulette.

Not so with the zombie.

From The Walking Dead to Hello Kitty Zombie parties for toddlers, it seems as if zombies have infested and infected every facet of our culture. Many have predicted their demise for what now feels like close to a decade, but much like the shambling hordes on Resident Evil, Shaun of the Dead, and Zombieland, they just keep coming…and coming…

things zombie GIF

Wait – what’s that group of people doing outside shambling along my sidewalk? They’re awfully pale…and having difficulty moving…Oh my God, is that an open head wound!? Now where did I leave the baseball bat?

Never mind about the horde gathering in my front yard. The point is there’s something about zombies that refuse to be beaten down. They just keep getting back up, the reincarnations are slight. They are always the walking, hungry, ravenous, and (mostly) unthinking horde.

Think back to your last monster nightmare. Was it a vampire or werewolf hunting you through a forest or abandoned warehouse? I know what monster haunts my dreams, and it’s always a zombie.

Zombies are terrifying – they can’t be reasoned with (most of the time), they’re unrelenting, and they want your brains.

the simpsons zombies GIF

So why is it we can’t get enough of them?

Well, once you peek under the surface, there are some serious and terrifying societal parallels. Twitter, Instagram, FB, YouTube, News, Netflix – even that weather app tucked way back in your pages and pages of apps, all of them are fighting for a slice of your attention, not unlike a pack of zombies are fighting for their pound of flesh (or brains – I’m not a zombie discriminator). And they want your attention. They’re designed to be addictive, to reward some addictive prone section of everyone’s brain. Marketing execs and advertisers swarm over the big data our use creates, building a profile of marketing and sales targets around those algorithms, treating us all a little bit like a mindless horde as we’re filed away into profile boxes. It’s even been suggested that our own free will is compromised, the algorithms so accurate and effective – infectious even – that they can sway our own thoughts and opinions.

Without us even realizing it.

We’re reduced to numbers, a digital notation on an invisible ledger. Watch the people around you the next time you’re on a bus, in a store, out to dinner, even waiting for a movie to start. I’ll bet an awful lot of people are hunched over their phones, zombie like in their obsession and blank features.

reaction s liv moore GIF

Scary. Zombie virus coursing through your veins anyone?

And then there’s globalization, yet again making me feel as if I’m part of a giant, unending, and often mindless horde that’s systematically taking over the planet, eating ourselves out of existence, and burying ourselves under a mass of plastic. Devoid of personality or significant distinctions. And don’t get me started on the political and current social atmospheres. It often feels as if gone are the days of nuanced discussions, friendly discourse, and open minds that formed my youth. Everyone has a voice…provided you share the right voice. No individual descent here, only the large cries of the hordes, a construct created and now fueled by social media. I know how often I feel as if I need to pick a side. My own discordant nuanced opinions aren’t wanted, and I daresay actively discouraged by social media at large.

Pick a side, any side, but the message is clear. Join a horde.

simon pegg comedy GIF by Coolidge Corner Theatre

I find myself seeking out small bands of like-minded survivors with whom to face the onslaught of the horde together, and if the success of Left for Dead is any indication, I’d say everyone is.

Kind of like I wish I had four best friends trained in armed combat now…Oh, dear – is that man who just stepped in my flower bed – is he missing an eye?! Come to think of it a few of them are – and limbs, and patches of skin…

When I sat down to write this I wasn’t certain why zombies were my worst nightmare, but now I see why. Strip the personality and independent thought away, add a number with a digitally calculated set of algorithmic opinions neatly filed into an appropriate marketing box that when applied can alter how you perceive the world, how you react – what you think you want out of life.

Thinking about it and I feel another zombie nightmare coming on…

zombie attack GIF by South Park

Or maybe it’s the horde outside. They’ve made it to my window and are banging on the glass to get in. It won’t be long now… All my greatest fears about technology, globalization, and big data rounded into a terrifying, primitive, pathogenic package that my instinctive sleeping mind can process.

I wonder if that’s why I write zombies that are thinking, ones who retain their personalities, their thoughts, their individuality, all the while at constant risk of becoming the horde. But there’s hope that they won’t. That despite the constant risk, the danger of zombifying they haven’t. Yet. They fight it.

angry shaun of the dead GIF

…Then again, it might just be that I really love a fantastic monster. One who scares the pants off me and is always good for an entertaining evening of fear, much like my cell phone is an endless source of entertainment, games, information, videos, monster plants versus zombies…

Take your pick what the zombie means to you, but no doubt about it they’re here… at your doorstep, in all their decrepit, rotting glory. And if the tone of society is any indication the horde is here for a very, very, long, camped out, siege worthy stay.

Release Day Review: Archangel's Prophecy by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Prophecy
(Guild Hunter #11)
Nalini Singh
Release: October 30, 2018
Goodreads Amazon
Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s darkly passionate Guild Hunter world, where human-turned-angel Elena Deveraux, consort to Archangel Raphael, is thrust center stage into an eons-old prophecy....

Midnight and dawn, Elena’s wings are unique among angelkind…and now they’re failing. The first mortal to be turned into an immortal in angelic memory, she’s regressing. Becoming more and more human. Easier to hurt. Easier to kill.

Elena and Raphael must unearth the reason for the regression before it’s too late and Elena falls out of the sky. Yet even as they fight a furious battle for Elena’s very survival, violent forces are gathering in New York and across the world.

In China, the Archangel Favashi is showing the first signs of madness. In New York, a mysterious sinkhole filled with lava swallows a man whole. In Africa, torrential monsoon rains flood rolling deserts. And in Elena’s mind whispers a haunting voice that isn’t her own.

This time, survival may not be possible…not even for the consort of an archangel.

Review:
I've loved Nalini Singh's books since I first picked up her Psy-Changeling series. I've absolutely loved her Guild Hunter series and I was so excited to get my hands on an ARC. But Oh, my giddy aunt! This book, you guys! This book is a ride! I just have one thing to say:

You know what you did, Nalini.

This book was... I read this months ago and I still don't have the words yet to discuss the crazy roller coaster ride this was. It was just one thing after another. My heart feels like it's gone 12 rounds with Mike Tyson. And that ending?!? OMG! I NEED THE NEXT BOOK ASAP! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!

I have the feeling that there is a lot of change coming to the Guild Hunter and that ending left a lot open. The next big Cascade event is coming and nobody has an idea what change it will bring. Clearly some change is already coming because that ending! I guess we should be thankful that it took eleven books for Nalini Singh to leave us on a cliffhanger ending.

I can't find the words to describe this book without spoiling things in it. I always look forward to reading each new Guild Hunter book every year. This series is hands down one of my favorite urban fantasy series worlds. Nalini Singh is a true master storyteller. Her incredibly well plotted arcs and dynamic characters always suck me in and don't let me go until I've ran out of pages. Archangel’s Prophecy was no different. I loved it even though it emotionally comprised me. It's going to be a long wait for the next book. I guess I'm just going to have to reread the whole series while we wait for it to be next fall.

Excerpt

You might have noticed that we're pretty excited for new Guild Hunter. We've got an excerpt featuring one of our favorite characters to get you in the mood too. You also get a little taste of the creepy prophetic voice in Elena's head.
Illium turned in a direction that would take them to the Catskills if they kept on going.
Sweeping closer to him, she said, “You just want to fly?”
Hair rippling in the quiet but cutting wind, he twisted down in a complicated fall before flying back up to her side. She laughed at his showing off. That was Illium. An angel of violent power who had a heart that might almost be mortal. And, these days, she could appreciate his tricks again. Not a single angel in the city had been ready to witness his acrobatics in the immediate aftermath of the day he’d crashed out of the sky.
Elena would never forget her screaming fear.
To his credit, Illium had flown with absolute discretion for months, letting the memory dull and fade.
When he returned to her side today, his face was flushed, the gold of his eyes rich. “Sky’s too beautiful to shut ourselves away in a club.”
“Just don’t forget I’m not as fast as you. Also, I’m currently lame.”
Illium lifted one cupped hand close to his shoulder, the other moving back and forth . . . and she realized he was playing a tiny violin in response to her morose tone.
“Crossbow, Bluebell.” Narrowed eyes. “Remember the crossbow.”
He dived, his wicked laughter floating up on the night air. Lips twitching, Elena continued to glide, letting the air currents sweep her along with cold but gentle hands. Illium, meanwhile, flew circles around her—but he never went far, always close enough to halt her descent should she tumble.
She landed a number of times to rest her wings, once in an isolated park whispering and dark. A luminescent insect appeared then disappeared from sight before she could truly see it, an earthbound star. The ghostly owl sitting on a tree branch watched her with eyes even more luminous.
A sigh deep in her mind, an old, old presence restless in Sleep.
The hairs rose on her arms.
Then Illium shot them both up into the sky again, and together, they flew far beyond the diamond-bright skyline of the city and over the sleeping homes of ordinary people who lived in a world of vampires and angels, blood and immortality.
Another rest stop for Elena.
Another throb of pain from the cut on her forearm.
Another watchful owl, this one landing on Illium’s shoulder without his knowledge. Ashwini had told her not to be afraid of the owls, so Elena ignored the goose bumps and said, Hello, with her mind. A good night to fly.
A vein began to throb at her temple.
The answer came a long time later, after they were in the air again, the glow of the sinkhole visible from the distance.
It has been an eon since I flew.

Review: The Stars Now Unclaimed by Drew Williams

The Stars Now Unclaimed
(The Universe After #1)
Drew Williams
Release: August 21, 2018
Goodreads Amazon
Perfect for fans of Firefly and James S. A. Corey's Expanse series, The Stars Now Unclaimed is a fun, adventure-filled ride around a far-future galaxy.

Jane Kamali is an agent for the Justified. Her mission: to recruit children with miraculous gifts in the hope that they might prevent the Pulse from once again sending countless worlds back to the dark ages.

Hot on her trail is the Pax--a collection of fascist zealots who believe they are the rightful rulers of the galaxy and who remain untouched by the Pulse.

Now Jane, a handful of comrades from her past, and a telekinetic girl called Esa must fight their way through a galaxy full of dangerous conflicts, remnants of ancient technology, and other hidden dangers.

And that's just the beginning . . .

Review:
The Stars Now Unclaimed
is the perfect example of why I read Science Fiction. Oh man! What a ride! There are so many good things about this novel that I can't believe it's a debut. The action sequences were thrilling and the characters are so amazing! I feel like Becky Chambers' blurb describes my experience with this book to a T:

"The only thing more fun than a bonkers space battle is a whole book packed with bonkers space battles. Come for the exploding spaceships, stay for the intriguing universe."—Becky Chambers, author of A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

This book got my attention right from the start because Holy Action-Packed Book, Batman! But I will admit that I was totally invested in the story once they lifted off into space. That was when the author finally started delving into the back stories of the people and their universe and I was totally here for it!

The world-building was actually more galaxy-building and it was done so well! The author deftly juggled the different races, introducing them to us at a pace that managed to inform me without being confusing or a massive info dump. Throughout the book, we learned more about the history of the galaxy, its planets and inhabitants, and its politics and I was intrigued from the get go. Especially with the Pulse and its affects on the universe. And as each new character was added I was hooked more and more until it was impossible to put this book down.

Overall, I loved this book! I loved that it was a fully contained story but it leaves enough open for more books. And I sincerely hope he does write a sequel. I'd love to go on another adventure with Jane, Esa, Preacher, Javier, Marus, and all the rest. I can't wait to see what Drew Williams writes next.

Weres Wanna Know: How Do You Make Time To Read?

You may have noticed that we haven't been posting a lot of content on the blog recently. Well, both Gretl and I have both been in the middle of a major reading slump for a while and it's hard to write bookish content when you're not reading. As for me, on top of being in a reading slump/book hangover thanks to Vengeful, my life situation has changed drastically in the last couple months. I started a new job and then my nephews came to live with me and my sister. The tips and tricks I'd used in the past to make time to read don't work for my current situation.

I miss reading. And I'll admit that until recently, I haven't had the energy to read. Being the mother figure for three little boys is hard and very exhausting. I don't know how you moms do it. You all have my utmost respect! And the more I don't read, the more I'm starting to get a bit stressed out with the number of unread books I'm accumulating because, of course, I haven't stopped buying books even though I haven't been reading.

So I want to know, what do you do to find more time to read? Because I need a new set of tools for my new situation especially the tips you all have that I would never have thought to try. I will say that I've managed to carve out some time on my lunch hour and before bed to read by sheer will alone but it's a very small amount compared to before. I don't even have the time to listen to audiobooks while I clean and cook like I used to because now I need to be able to hear if my nephews are screaming.

I think the biggest problem is that I lost my habit of reading. Before I had it so ingrained into my schedule that I never had to think about making time for it like I do now. I want to get back to that if I can.

So tell me, what tips do you have for me? What do you do to make time to read?

To Catch a Rogue
(London Steampunk: The Blueblood Conspiracy #4)
Bec McMaster
Release: October 30, 2018
Goodreads Amazon
B&N iBooks Kobo
ARC provided by the author
An impossible heist. A thief and a rogue. But will she steal his heart, instead?

The Company of Rogues finally knows the identity of the mastermind behind a plot against the queen—but their enemy is still one step ahead of them. When he kidnaps one of theirs, the Rogues plan a daring rescue mission that will lead them into the heart of the bloodthirsty Crimson Court.

It's a job for a master thief, and there's nothing Charlie Todd likes more than a challenge. To pull off the impossible, Charlie needs a crew, including the only thief who's ever been able to outfox him.

He broke her heart. But now she must risk it all to save his life...

Lark's spent years trying to forget her past, but the one thing she can't ignore is the way a single smile from Charlie still sets her heart on fire. When he proposes they work together again, it feels just like old times, but she has one rule: this is strictly business.

It's Charlie's last chance to prove he can be trusted with her heart. But Lark's keeping a deadly secret. And as passions are stirred and the stakes mount, it might be the kind of secret that could destroy them all...

Ocean's 11 meets Dracula, in this sexy paranormal heist by USA Today Bestselling Author, Bec McMaster. If you like sexy paranormal romances, steampunk shenanigans, and plenty of action-adventure (vampires, dirigible flights, and steamy rooftop chases), then dive into this thrilling heist with Charlie and Lark.
Review:
It's always a little bit surreal to see characters you met when they were children grow up to be the lead characters in a romance. If you've been with the London Steampunk series from the beginning, that's probably how you feel about Charlie and Lark. But you've also probably been rooting for them to get together since the finale of the original series, if not earlier. (Don't worry if you started the series with The Blueblood Conspiracy, you'll still be able to follow their story. You will encounter several spoilers for earlier books though.)

It's so much fun to see these characters grow up in each other's eyes as they realize how they feel. Their romance is surprisingly sweet and innocent. (I mean not totally innocent, but certainly when compared to the previous book.) There's plenty of action outside the bedroom to make up for it though.

This book is like one of the movies that inspire the series titles, full of explosions and knife fights and lots of surprises. But I felt like the biggest surprise was Lark's backstory. I never would have guessed it would go in that direction, or impact another character in the Company of Rogues. I also loved the new characters they meet in Russia and the old friends who come along on the trip. And the little references to previous books! I've just been reminded of everything I love about the series.

London Steampunk fans, you're going to love To Catch a Rogue! It turns the action and intrigue that the series is famous for up to eleven. And the nostalgia is just perfect. Go hit that preorder button, like now!

We Love Lists: Books We'd Buy This Minute If We Could

I don't know about you but I love watching people's Instastories. Recently, I've seen this topic coming up over and over again and I want to do it too! So I'm doing a list post today! What is the topic, you ask? It's all about the books you'd buy this minute if you didn't have to worry about money or the size of your TBR. So basically this whole post is basically my current book shopping list that I don't have pre-ordered.

1. In the Vanisher's Palace by Aliette de Bodard
One sentence sold this book to me and it was "f/f Beauty and the Beast retelling with dragons". How could I not want this book after hearing a sentence like that? I need all the queer and genderbent fairy tale retellings in my life like yesterday.

2. This is Kind of an Epic Love Story by Kheryn Callender
I'm always up for a good LGBTQ+ love story with a cynical character who doesn't believe in love or happy endings. And this is exactly what this book promises to deliver! Plus, I've heard nothing but good things about this book from early reviewers! Don't be surprised if I end up hauling this book at the end of this month.

3. Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren
I've only read Autoboyography by Christina Lauren and I've been meaning to read one of their adult books ever since I finished it. So after reading the synopses of all their books, I'm pretty sure that this book is going to be my inaugural Christina Lauren adult book. It sounds so cute and relatable and I'm a total sucker for the Best Friends to Lovers trope! I can't wait to pick this up soon!

Check out Gretl's review of Josh and Hazel.

4. Ogre Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
OMG! I just found out that they just released an Ella Enchanted prequel and I need it in my life! Ella Enchanted was one of my favorite books growing up and I read my paperback copy to literal pieces. I can't wait to get my hands on this book and revisit this world. I foresee an Ella Enchanted reread in my near future.

5. To Catch A Rogue by Bec McMaster
Okay. One, this isn't out till next week. And two, I haven't even read the first book of this spin-off series. But I NEED this book! I've wanted a Charlie and Lark book since I read the original London Steampunk series. I'll just have to binge read the first three books this week, right?

Watch for our stop on the To Catch a Rogue blog tour later this week!

What book(s) would you buy right now if you could?

Novella Review: The Black God's Drums

The Black God's Drums
P. Djèlí Clark
Release: August 21, 2018
Goodreads Amazon
Creeper, a scrappy young teen, is done living on the streets of New Orleans. Instead, she wants to soar, and her sights are set on securing passage aboard the smuggler airship Midnight Robber. Her ticket: earning Captain Ann-Marie’s trust using a secret about a kidnapped Haitian scientist and a mysterious weapon he calls The Black God’s Drums.

But Creeper keeps another secret close to heart--Oya, the African orisha of the wind and storms, who speaks inside her head and grants her divine powers. And Oya has her own priorities concerning Creeper and Ann-Marie…

Review:
Man, Tor.com has put out some real stellar novellas this year! The Black God's Drums was short but it packed a lot in. The language, world-building and characters grip you and it managed a full story in 110 pages. I do think this would have benefited from being longer but it was good as it was.

This story features an alternative history America where the events of the American Civil War have been slightly changed and the States are not as United as they once were. Slavery is still present, but there are key differences, and each state operates to its own rules. Also, there's a bunch of steampunk tech. And it’s on an airship that our main character, Creeper, wants to escape on and leave New Orleans behind.

The magic system in this book was intriguing. Creeper has divine powers courtesy of Oya, the African orisha of the wind and storms, who lives inside her and pulls her this way and that to her own purposes. I would love to see this explored more in hopefully future novellas.

I adored the airship captain and would love a series on her life and loves as well as a heck of a lot more of this world and the rest of its characters. I want more about Creeper goes without saying but I'd love to know more about the nuns.

For a novella, this story was executed wonderfully. It has a full world and history along with great characters. It was a very satisfying, short read. I just need more. Hopefully, we'll see more books and novellas by
P. Djèlí Clark in the near future.
